Women’s center offers help to survivors of domestic violence Who would believe it? The multimillionaire who had his pick of eligible women was reported to have a restraining order issued against him because he threatened to kill his former girlfriend and had hit her. More than 22 million people reportedly turned on their television sets to watch Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire? What the viewers and the selected bride didn’t realize was that the wealthy man had a history of abusive behavior. The Women’s Center of Monmouth County works every day to aid the survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in their attempt to rebuild lives into violence-free ones. The men who belong to the WCMC Men’s Task Force have dedicated their volunteer time to serve as role models for men and young boys, and demonstrate that there is no room for abuse in Monmouth County. Domestic violence is everywhere. It happens to the rich and famous and to people in our neighborhoods. I want to take the opportunity to urge those in need of assistance to contact the Women’s Center at our toll-free 24-hour hot lines: 1-888-THE WCMC for domestic violence, 1-888-264-RAPE for sexual assault, and (732) 264-4111, the general hot line. Those needing help changing their abusive behaviors can call the Alternatives to Abuse program at (732) 264-4360, ext. 252 for intervention counseling designed to break violent and abusive behavior. Dedicated professionals are available to help families cope with violence and begin to choose alternatives that will embrace healthy and safe living choices. Anna M.
