plans Myrtle Beach trip

Calvary United Methodist Church is planning a bus trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., Oct. 15-21. Cost is $475 per person, based on double, triple or quad occupancy. Please add $109 for single occupancy.

The trip includes lodging, six full course breakfasts, six dinners, guided tours and shows.

Hospital Thrift Shop to hold ‘Fill-a-Bag’ sale

The Bayshore Community Hospital Thrift Shop will hold its semiannual, two day "Fill-a-Bag-for-$2" sale on July 24-25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The shop is located at 88 Broad St., Keyport. It will re-open at its regular hours on Aug. 21.

Vietnam Veterans group to sponsor blood drive

Bayshore Area Chapter 721 of Vietnam Veterans of America is sponsoring a blood drive on July 21 at Keyport VFW Post 4247, Third and Waverly streets in Keyport, from 5:30-8 p.m.

Matawan plans annual ‘Downtown Celebration’

The Downtown Matawan Alliance and the Matawan Police Department will hold their fourth annual "Downtown Celebration" on Aug. 1 from 7-10 p.m. The event will be staged on Main Street, with a rain date of Aug. 2.

Live entertainment will include The New Jersey Dixie Cats, Mission Dance, and The Brookdale Community College Big Band, as well as activities such as face painting, clowns, and demonstrations.

Major sponsors include Bayshore Community Health Services, Cifelli Disposal, Matawan Online and Summit Bank.

Matawan Women’s Club to sponsor yard sale

The Matawan Women’s Club will sponsor a giant indoor yard sale on Aug. 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at its clubhouse, 199 Jackson Street, Matawan.

Tommy Dorsey Orchestra

part of concert series

The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra will perform at Normandy Park on July 20 at 7 p.m. as part of Middletown’s 2000 Summer Concert Series in the Park. The 17-piece touring band is led by Buddy Morrow, who replaced Dorsey in 1977.

Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge will perform on Aug. 3, and the series ends with a performance by Shirley Alston Reeves, formerly lead singer of the Shirelles, on Aug. 17.

All concerts are free, and individuals are free to bring a blanket or lawn chair. Shows will be moved indoors to Middletown High School North, Tindall Road, in the event of rain.

St. Mary’s Theater Group

offers N.Y. excursions

St. Mary’s Theater Group, New Monmouth, is now offering tickets for The Nutcracker Ballet, on Dec. 3, with a 10 a.m. departure and return at approximately 4:30 p.m. The ballet is at the New York State Theater in Lincoln Center and tickets are $69. The bus will depart Mater Dei High School parking lot on Cherry Tree Farm Road.

Ticket price includes third ring seating, transportation, driver’s tip and all taxes. Prepaid reservations must be made before July 31.

The group is sponsoring a New York trip to see the Christmas Show on Dec. 10, with the bus departing the high school parking lot at noon and returning at approximately 8:30 p.m. The show is at Radio City Music Hall, and price is $81. There will be time prior to the show to have lunch on your own, view the tree at Rockefeller Center, visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral and other activities.

Cost includes orchestra seats, transportation and all taxes and tips. Prepaid reservations must be made before Aug. 10. For reservations for both events, call Pat Thompson at (732) 615-9088.

Financial workshops set at Middletown Library

Middletown Township Public Library, 55 New Monmouth Road, has scheduled free financial workshops with guest speaker Jerry Iacangelo, senior investment executive of Diversified Financial Services Group.

"Long Term Care Needs" will be held July 19 at 2 p.m.; "Examining Estate Planning" is July 20 at 2 p.m., and July 26 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.; "Retirement Planning" is July 27 at 7 p.m.; "Managing My Mutual Funds" is on Aug. 2 at 2 p.m.; and "Analyzing Annuities" will be held Aug. 3 at 2 p.m.

All workshops will take place at the library. The library’s hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Saturdays during July and August. For more information, call (732) 671-3700.
