The availability of $45 million in state library construction funding has book lovers and library directors taking note.

According to Middletown Library Director Susan O’Neill, this is the first time in 10 years that such funding has been offered.

Funding is limited to a certain percentage of any project, according to O’Neill.

In Middletown’s case, the proposed price tag for a major renovation of the main New Monmouth Road library would be very costly, an estimated $8.3 million, so outside funding is critical.

At age 30, Middletown’s library is just "plan outdated," according to O’Neill. The mechanical system has outlived itself, the electrical system just can’t handle today’s technology demands and last, but certainly not least, library space is some 40,000 volumes shy.

While 30 might not seem that old, library demands have increased dramatically over the past generation.

In today’s world libraries can and should play a much larger role in young children’s lives and should offer diverse programming for adults.

Middletown residents who value their library, which is independent of the county library system, and want to see it improved should make a point of stopping by to view the expansion plans and offer their support.
