AUGUST R. ANANIA, 81, of Palo Alto, Calif., died June 10 at home. Born in New York City, he was a retired lieutenant colonel for the U.S. Air Force. He received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, and a master’s degree from Stanford University, Stanford, Calif. He was predeceased by his wife, Helena in 1989. He is survived by two sisters, Rose Russo of Upper Montclair and Grace Olsen of Bricktown; his brother, Joseph J. Anania of Middletown; four nephews; and two nieces.
ROSINA "ROSE" CALIENDO GRANATO, 92, of Keyport died July 10 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Matawan prior to moving to Keyport. She was a homemaker. In the early years of her marriage, she ran the Granato Farm Market, Holmdel, with her husband. From 1921-37, she was employed at various establishments including Keyport Tile, Matawan Tile and Mosaic Tile. She was a communicant of St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, Matawan, and St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Granato, in 1973; her daughter, Loretta G. Mione; three brothers, Salvatore, Pasquale and Thomas Caliendo; and her sister, Theresa C. Della Pietro. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Rosemary Granato of Toms River; her daughter, Carmella "Carol" Granato of Keyport; her son-in-law, Lawrence Mione of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, John Caliendo of Morganville and Ralph Caliendo of Hazlet; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
JOSEPH E. NEWMAN, 69, of Matawan died July 17 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in New York City, he resided in Queens, N.Y., before moving to Matawan 27 years ago. He was a security supervisor at Pace University, New York City. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, Matawan. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 23, Keyport. He was predeceased by his sister, Susan Lopez of Williston Park, N.Y. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Alice J. Longo Newman of Matawan; three brothers, William Newman of Woodside, N.Y., John Newman of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James Newman of Placentia, Calif.; and five sisters, Dorothy Leoci of Albertson, N.Y., Joan Byard of Anaheim, Calif., Patricia Medina of Miami, Kathleen Sanders of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Ann Newman of Daytona Beach, Fla. A memorial Mass was offered at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church.
WARREN D. HAWTHORNE, 76, of Philadelphia died July 18 at Fairview Care Nursing Home, Philadelphia. Born in Pelham, N.Y., he lived in Hazlet prior to moving to Philadelphia five years ago. He was a commercial artist for J. Schiller Corp., Linden, for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Mulvaney of Wildwood; four sons, Theodore R. Hawthorne of Keasby, James W. Hawthorne of Miami Beach, David B. Hawthorne of Matawan, and Mark R. Hawthorne of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Robert Hawthorne of Toms River, and Donald Hawthorne of Texas; and four granddaughters. Burial was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
JOHN N. COLONNA, 54, of Middletown died July 20 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Middletown the past 21 years. He was a computer technician for Kearfott, Wayne, for 28 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Giovanni Colonna and Natalie Caldore. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Doree Moskowitz Colonna of Middletown; his son and daughter, Max. J. and Merry N. Colonna, also of Middletown; and his brother, Richard Colonna of Kearny.
PHILLIP RAYNER, 88, of the Belford section of Middletown died July 20 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Union City, he lived in West New York before moving to Belford 45 years ago. He was a supervisor for Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member and elder for more than 40 years at Middletown Reformed Church. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Koehler Rayner of Belford; his son, Guy Rayner of Eatontown; and his daughter and son-in-law, Gail and James Alverson of Monmouth Beach. A funeral service was at Middletown Reformed Church, followed by burial at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
FRANCES C. VICIDOMINI, 94, of Middletown died July 20 at Beachview Extended Care Facility, Keansburg. Born in Newark, she lived in Lyndhurst prior to moving to Middletown 17 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, as well as a member of Our Lady of Carmel Society, Newark. She was a member of the Middletown Senior Citizens. She was predeceased by her husband, Pasquale Vicidomini in 1985. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ralph of Sayreville, Louis and Dorothy of the Colonia section of Woodbridge, and Anthony and June; and granddaughter Lauren Vicidomini of Middletown, with whom she lived. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
MARIAN E. COSTELLO, 76, of Middletown died July 21 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Born in Jersey City, she previously lived in Keansburg and moved to Middletown in 1953. She was a typist for Mann Temp Services, Red Bank, for 10 years. Prior to that she worked for Fort Monmouth. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Travel was one of her interests. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Costello, in 1998; her daughter, Karen Anne Costello; two sisters, Mildred Schaible and Marguerite Peters; and her brother, Francis Becker. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raymond D. and Judy Costello of Brick, and Kenneth C. Costello of Long Branch; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen D. and Tripp Dupree of Rumson, and Claudette S. and John Scoras of Manasquan; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral gathering will take place July 26 at 9:15 a.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown A funeral liturgy will follow at 10:15 a.m. at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
JOSEPH F. REILLY, 84, of Red Bank died July 21 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Queens, N.Y., he previously lived in Flushing, N.Y., and Satellite, Fla., and moved to Red Bank three years ago. He was an English teacher for Archbishop Malloy High School, Queens, for 10 years before retiring in 1972. Prior to that, he was a New York City firefighter for 20 years, before retiring in 1962. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and attained the rank of lieutenant. His hobbies included golf and reading. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Rose Reilly in 1996 and Kay Morris in 1998. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Masterson Reilly of Red Bank; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Larry J. and Mary Ann Reilly of Middletown, and Frank M. Reilly of Warwick, N.Y.; and three granddaughters. A funeral gathering will be July 25 at 9:30 a.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will follow at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
MARY C. PAYTON, 66, of Hazlet died July 22 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in New York City, she moved to Hazlet 35 years ago. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, John Payton Sr. of Hazlet; her son, John Payton Jr., also of Hazlet; her daughter, Mary Pato of Old Bridge; two sisters, Dora McGuire of Deal, and Betty King of New York City; and her brother, Owen Kehoe Jr. of Yonkers, N.Y. There will be a one-hour funeral gathering July 26 at 9:30 a.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport, followed by a funeral Mass offered at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. CELESTINA M. THOMSON, 76, of Hazlet died July 22 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived there and in Clifton prior to moving to Hazlet 45 years ago. She was a clerk for Bell Telephone/Bell Labs, Holmdel, for 36 years and retired in 1988. She was a communicant of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, where she was also a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She was a member of the AT&T Pioneers club. She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Manuel Viagas; and three sisters, Rose McKechnie, Isabel Rodriguez, and Anne Thomson. She is survived by her husband, Alexander Thomson of Hazlet; her daughter Margaret Olini of Piscataway; her brother, Anthony Viagas of Franklin Square, N.Y.; and two granddaughters. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Entombment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
JOHN JOSEPH DUFFY, 80, of Old Bridge died July 12 at home. His wife, Marion LeBlanc Duffy, died in 1991. Surviving are three sons, Edward Duffy of Hilton, N.Y., Peter Duffy of Spotswood and John Duffy of Helmetta; four daughters, Helen Moran of Keyport, Elizabeth Duffy of Old Bridge, Kathy Rodriguez of Glendale, Ariz., and Florence Duffy of the Cliffwood Beach section of Old Bridge; a sister, Josephine McCarrick of Holiday, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Bernadette’s Church, Parlin section of Old Bridge. Entombment was in Forest Green Park Cemetery, Marlboro.
STANLEY MOZDZEN, 80, of Sayreville died July 11 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. His wife, Stella Drozd Mozdzen, died in 1996. Surviving are two sons, Stanley of Englishtown and James of Sayreville; two daughters, Frances Monetti and Joyce Uler, both of the Parlin section of Sayreville; two brothers, Edmund Mozdzen and Joseph Mozdzen, both of Sayreville; three sisters, Helen Mozdzen and Wanda Stelmaszek, both of Sayreville, and Theresa Swiderski of Spotswood; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass was offered at Our Lady of Victories Church, Sayreville. Interment was in New Calvary Cemetery, Sayreville.
JOHN F. CISZESKI, 77, of the Belford section of Middletown died July 14 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Middletown, he previously lived in Matawan for 21 years, before moving to Belford. He was retired having been a maintenance worker for Mortel Industries, Perth Amboy, for 5 years. Prior to that, he worked for 20 years for Ritter Trucking, Rahway. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary R. Ciszeski of Belford; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Armand LaGuardia of Belford; his sister, Clara Reide of Connecticut; and two granddaughters, Amanda and Marissa LaGuardia of Belford. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by burial at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown.
