Where were parents to support teachers?

I have borne witness to many shortcomings of such a large community, but none that will rip and tear at the hearts of the dedicated people we entrust to educate our children to, day-after-day, and year-after-year. It truly bothers me the same people that send their children to school with flowers, presents, letters and cards for special events and holidays were not out there returning the support they give to our children, day-after-day, and year-after-year. Have you ever heard the saying "a hug lasts an eternity because it is formed by an unbroken circle?" Where were those hugs this week?

I personally walked and talked with many teachers on the picket lines and even opened up my house for them to use the restroom. My children and I were also witness to the events as they unfolded in Freehold. This was truly a very hard time for all of us. There were times we laughed, cried, hugged, talked, or just stood in silent awe. But, at all times, we were there to support one another. Again I ask, where were you? Were you one of the ones I heard say "Good! Lock them up and throw away the key"? Is that what you teach your children? Is that the same kind of respect you would like to receive at home? Well, this is not the respect I would like my children to learn. I am glad they saw people stand up for what they believe in, even though the consequences were very difficult.

I was also in Freehold on Dec. 7 to see the first through the last teacher released. I wish I could personally be at the door of every building Dec. 10 to show the same support again. Since there are 17 schools in the district, it would truly be impossible, but I would like all of you to know my heart is truly with you.
