Ferries & duck shot don’t mix

Keyport definitely needs to take action to prevent a repeat of recent duck-shooting events in the borough.

A Keyport Fast Ferry vessel was recently hit by duck shot. No passengers were aboard, but Michael Cummins, the owner of the service, definitely didn’t like the ding-ding sound of the duck shot he heard through the fog.

He thinks it was a fluke.

Maybe it was also a fluke when two anxious hunters preparing to jump into their boat at the American Legion Drive boat ramp spotted some ducks and couldn’t resist firing from the ramp — in front of a borough councilman.

Supporters of regulations are not out to stop duck hunting. They simply want to make sure that it occurs away from public places and away from ferry boats.

The two recent occurrences may have been flukes, but without a weapons discharge ordinance in place, they could happen again and nobody wants that.
