Local wine shop named business of the month
By Josh Davidson
Staff Writer

VERONICA YANKOWSKI Felix Sanchez (l) and Kristen Sipler (r) stand under the archways in front of the vast display of wines at Matawan’s La Bottega wine shop.

MATAWAN — Being selected as Matawan’s May Business of the Month is evidence that La Bottega Wine Shop owner Felix Sanchez’s efforts to please his customers has paid off.

Sanchez’s wine shop was nominated for the award and given this distinction by local residents.

Coming up on its first anniversary next month, this is a business trying to work with, not against, the interests of its customers.

"There’s so much good wine out in the marketplace," the owner said.

Sanchez’s staff tries not to push people away from their favorite wine, but attempts to steer customers toward quality wines and distinctive new wines.

"We try to move people not in a different direction, but in the next direction," he said.

La Bottega’s staff approaches customers as much as possible.

They’re told to ask simple questions on their likes and dislikes, said Sanchez.

"Just to get a sense of what the customer wants," he added. "Not what we think the customer wants."

The staff then helps with the customers’ selection process by offering as many alternatives as possible.

The staff hopes to make for a better dinner or dinner party.

"Felix is very knowledgeable about wines from all over the world and how to serve them," said Sheila Flamm, director of recreation and downtown redevelopment.

Flamm coordinates the Business of the Month honor for the borough.

For La Bottega, this means the store has been appreciated by its customers.

"People are really receiving (the shop) well," said Sanchez. "It’s like a little recognition from my customers that they like what I’m doing here.".

According to Flamm, the award reflects customer approval.

Businesses chosen for the award must demonstrate quality customer service and make a good contribution to the community, said Flamm. Many have helped local charities.

"We do try to make sure that all the businesses that do get the award have some of that criteria," said Flamm.

La Bottega is located at 237 Main St., Matawan.
