Mid-Monmouth 16-year-old all-stars win their first two in Jersey City

CHRIS KELLY Mid-Monmouth North’s A.J. Roque fires a pitch during a game in Manalapan on Sunday.

The Mid-Monmouth 16-year-old All-Star team enjoyed a successful weekend in Jersey City.

The talented squad won its first two games in the 16s-only tournament, including a win on Saturday over defending stage champion Iron Area, from Mercer County, 3-0.

The Mid-Monmouth squad then followed that up with a 4-3 win over Hudson on Sunday in the second round.

That win earned them a shot at Bergen County, who knocked off Middlesex in their opener on Sunday. With a win in that game (held Monday night), the Mid-Monmouth squad would play tonight in the finals. A loss would mean another game last night in the finals of the loser’s bracket.

CHRIS KELLY Mid-Monmouth North’s John Cerry makes the grab at home plate while Manalapan’s Eddie Rodriguez scores a run during Sunday’s game in Manalapan.

Tonight’s final is set for 7:30 p.m., with the if-necessary game set for tomorrow night.

The winner of the five-team tournament will go on to play in a regional tournament in Clinton, Maryland, which will include teams from nine different states.

The Mid-Monmouth team is coach by J.P. Noval, and includes some of the top 16-year-old players from throughout Monmouth County.

The squad includes Jordan Noval, Bill Franks, Andy Lamboy and Craig Panella from Manalapan; Steve Morreale, Joe DiCaro and Chris Coulson from Freehold; Steve Richter and David Rada from Madison Park; Rob Ruhl and Tom Porricelli from North Howell; Mark Miglione, John Leslewski, Mike Plagianakos and Steve Bilowus from Raritan; and Joe Bartlinski and Dan Heimall from South Amboy.
