Strathmore swim team continues to improve

With three meets remaining, the Strathmore Swim & Tennis Club’s swim team needs just one more win to equal its victory total of last year.

After suffering through six winless seasons, Strathmore went 3-5 last summer, and second-year coach Jennamarie DeVito’s team has continued improving this year.

With more than 100 competitors, the Strathmore team has plenty of talent to choose from, and the team’s ability to put some wins on the board has helped the swimmers’ confidence, DeVito said.

"We went a long time without winning and we had swimmers who’d been here six years who had never won," said DeVito, who is entering her junior year at Lehigh, where she captains the swim team. "This has always been a hard-working team, but once they got that first win they worked even harder and it carried over into this season."

Among Strathmore’s top swimmers are, on the girls’ side: 8 & under: Julia Cherofsky, Shannon Cogland, Paige Larkin and Rachel Scher; 9-10: Amelia Buckley, Kathleen Cogland and Katelyn Cutting; 11-12: Kelly Markwell, Amanda Neubart and Rachel Williams; 13-14: Kimberly Cogland, Caroline Faughnan, Heather Olsen and Arianna Rocco; and 15-18: Cherylann DeVito, Lisa Romanski, Allison Smith and Lauren Sohn, who doubles as an assistant coach.

The top boys competitors include: 8 & under: Joseph Buckley, Richard Hines, Drew Orzechowski, Evan Scher and Eric Williams; 9-10: Matthew Cohen, Zach Demetrios, Frank DeVito and Charles Wu; 11-12: David Cherofsky, twins Grant and Harris Eberbach, and Eric Mahler; 13-14: Nick Demetrios, Nick Tupper and Nick Williams; and 15-18: Nolan Doyle and Vincent Tupper.

"It’s very enjoyable to work with these kids and especially to watch them improve," coach DeVito said. "They’re having a lot of fun and that really is the main thing."

In addition to Sohn, DeVito is assisted by Steve Smith, now in his third year.
