Several local students were recently nominated for induction into the spring 2004 National Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes high-achieving high school and middle schools students with a “b” or better grade average. Local inductees were: Danielle J. Prosinski, Belford section of Middletown, Middletown High School North; Laura Nicholson, North Middletown, High Technology High School, Lincroft section of Middletown; Jennifer E. Compton, Port Monmouth section of Middletown High School North; Christie Leigh Bontales and James Nici, both Holmdel and students at Holmdel High School; Danielle Buccino and Ashley P. Mehlman, both Leonardo section of Middletown, and students at Middletown High School South; Danielle C. Holmes and Monique Schulmann, both Lincroft, and students at Middletown High School South; and Jawann Brown, Eaven S. Lester and George T. Lewis, all Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, and students at Matawan-Aberdeen Regional High School, Aberdeen. Keyport students inducted were: Ashley Coleman, Keyport High School; Nidia Marie Gonzalez, Matawan-Aberdeen Regional; Ryan Hubler, Keyport High School; Ebony Shaw, Matawan-Aberdeen Regional; and Huseyin Tunceroglu, Matawan-Aberdeen Regional. Middletown inductees were: Christyn Mary Budzyna, Mater Dei; Lindsay Canning, Gilmour Academy, Cleveland, Ohio; Joshua J. Koczman, Bridgeway Christian Academy, Alpharetta, Ga.; Dana M. Lagomarsino, Mater Dei; Diana Rose Larrea, Middletown High School North; Christina Lin, Middletown High School South; Sean Linford, High Technology High School; and Christopher Urbin, Middletown High School North. Eric Astor, Middletown, a senior at Ranney School, Tinton Falls, was recently named a 2004-05 Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar. Astor was selected from 5,000 of the highest-achieving students in New Jersey to receive scholarship award offers for the coming academic year. He was also named an AP Scholar by the College Board during the fall. Bloustein Scholars must place in the top 10 percent of the class and have a minimum SAT score of 1260, or be ranked first, second or third in the class as of the end of the junior year.
Members of the class of 2005 at Mater Dei High School, New Monmouth section of Middletown, were also named as recipients of the Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar Award. Honored as award winners were Matthew Carroll, Joseph Gallo, Kristen Hesler, James McDevitt and Kathryn Michal.
Peter Hayward, a senior at Mater Dei High School, New Monmouth section of Middletown, recently earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board for exceptional achievement on the college-level advanced placement (AP) program exams. Hayward completed three AP exams, with a grade of three or higher. He will pursue a degree at The College of New Jersey, Ewing.
Students from High Technology High School, Lincroft section of Middletown, will take part in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) robotics competition kick-off Jan. 8 at NJIT, Newark. The students will be sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb. The competition is a multinational competition that teams professionals and high school students to solve an engineering design problem. The kick-off will prepare students for the March competition.
Casey W. Morizio, Aberdeen, was recently accepted into The National Society of Collegiate Scholars, an honors organization that recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students that excel academically. A sophomore at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, Morizio is the daughter of Sharon and Mike Morizio.
James Nausedas Jr., Hazlet, was recently inducted in to the Golden Key International Honour Society at The College of New Jersey, Ewing. A 2001 graduate of Raritan High School, Hazlet, Nausedas is majoring in journalism. Students in the society must rank in the top 15 percent of all juniors and seniors. Nausedas is the son of Linda and James Nausedas Sr. Cathleen Ziegler, Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, was recently inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Society at Rider University, Lawrenceville. The society recognizes students that have demonstrated leadership skills. Ziegler is a junior majoring in journalism.
Jennifer E. Rotondella, Port Monmouth section of Middletown, recently received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education at the winter commencement exercises at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University.
Jill R. Robinson, Matawan, was recently inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society at The College of New Jersey, Ewing, where she is majoring in graphic arts. A 2002 graduate of Matawan-Aberdeen Regional High School, Aberdeen, she has been on the dean’s list consistently since freshman year. She is the daughter of Judy and Dudley Robinson.
Michael Luciano, Lincroft section of Middletown, recently took part in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., in early December. Students are chosen for the conference based on high standards in academics and leadership. Luciano was one of approximately 400 outstanding scholars from around the country at the conference, themed “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.” During the six-day conference, Luciano interacted with a variety of personnel who operate within the three branches of government, the news media, and the international community; and participated in leadership skill-building activities and simulations.
