The office of business and community development at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, will host two three-day workshops for current and prospective substitute teachers Aug. 16-18 and Sept. 27-29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school’s campus, Newman Springs Road. Topics will include strategies and survival skills for all grade levels, administration expectations, classroom management tips and tricks, and evaluating and improving substituting performance. The program will be facilitated by Barbara J. McMorrow, who began in the Freehold Regional High School District in 1971 and retired as principal of Howell High School in 2003. She also served almost 10 years as councilwoman for the Borough of Freehold and is listed in "Who’s Who in American Education" and "Who’s Who of American Women." The course code is XEECG 434. Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Susan Bass Levin recently announced that $2.2 million will be distributed to 56 towns throughout the state for property tax relief in watershed moratorium offset aid. The aid recognizes that municipalities with watershed land that cannot be developed do not generate adequate property tax revenue. The aid program was established by the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act and is administered through the DCA’s division of local government services. Area towns receiving watershed moratorium offset aid are Colts Neck, $28,388; Holmdel, $5,076; and Middletown, $7,755.

The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, (NJMSC) Sandy Hook, recently received two APEX 2004 Awards for publication excellence, marking the fifth consecutive year the NJMSC has been recognized for outstanding publications and outreach materials. The national awards are based on excellence in editorial content, graphic design and outstanding achievement for overall communications effectiveness. NJMSC received an award for magazine and journal writing for its "Jersey Shoreline" magazine, and an award for the poster "New Jersey’s Strange and Ugly Fish" created for its annual Coast Day NJ — Celebration of the Sea event. The magazine and journal award was presented to Kim Kosko, director of communications and editor of "Jersey Shoreline," while the design award in the calendar, posters and certificates category went to graphic designer Rory Joyce, Mantoloking, and Jenny McCormick, a New Jersey Sea Grant associate. The magazine is published three times a year, and profiles efforts in the public and private sector that work toward promoting the sustainability of New Jersey’s marine resources. The poster was a commemorative project designed for Coast Day. More than 5,500 entries were submitted to the awards competition.

The Consortium has also announced the appointment of Dr. Peter M. Rowe as director of its New Jersey Sea Grant Extension Program. Prior to joining NJMSC, he was a visiting assistant professor at Shippensburg (Pa.) University, and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Pomona. He will develop and supervise projects and activities conducted by the outreach division of the Sea Grant program. Rowe took part in a Sea Grant-funded blue crab research project while a graduate student at the Graduate College of Marine Studies, University of Delaware, Newark, where he also became familiar with the operation of Delaware’s marine extension program. He received his bachelor in arts degree in biology at Gettysburg (Pa.) College, and his master of science degree in marine sciences and doctor of philosophy degree in oceanography at the University of Delaware.

Holmdel antique appraiser Suzy McLennon Anderson, in conjunction with Red Bank Antique Center, Bridge Avenue, will take part in antique appraisals for four Sundays during August, beginning Aug. 1 from noon-2 p.m. at Building 2 at the center. The appraisals will be free courtesy of the antique center as a way of thanking its patrons, and customers are allowed two appraisals per person. Anderson is a certified appraiser with the International Society of Appraisers, and the owner of Anderson Auctions and Heritage Appraisal Services, Holmdel. She is also a dealer at the Red Bank center. The center was established 40 years ago, and houses approximately 100 dealers in three buildings. Acme Markets, Malvern, Pa., has announced a fund-raising effort to assist local relief agencies affected by the recent floods in New Jersey. The campaign will run through Aug. 8, and collection canisters will be placed at each cash register, with the firm matching each dollar collected up to $10,000. Area Acme markets are located in the Lincroft section of Middletown, Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, Shrewsbury and Fair Haven.

Mark L. Engel, M.D., and Ronald D. Klug, M.D., of Ophthalmic Physicians of Monmouth, Holmdel, has announced the addition of Jason J. Steinfeld, M.D., Morganville, to the doctors’ practice. Steinfeld recently completed his residency at the State University of New York, health sciences center at Brooklyn. He specializes in comprehensive ophthalmology such as small incision cataract surgery and Lasik. Steinfeld received his degree magna cum laude at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., and his medical degree at Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, Hershey, Pa.

Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts recently held its 13th annual golf classic which raised $44,000 for the council. The event was the Scouts’ most successful golf outing yet, and was co-chaired by Gerard Norkus of Norkus Foodtown, and Dr. Peter Bastardo, Rutgers University. The golf classic committee included Vicky Chilton, West American Mortgage Company; Robin Fitzmaurice, Shrewsbury State Bank; Lou Grob, House of Hearing Aides; attorney Alice Guttler; CentraState Healthcare System; Tom Hayes, New Jersey Natural Gas; Carole Horowitz, Commerce Bank; Kevin Keefe, Keefe Printing & Graphics; Bob McGirr, Clayton & Sons Funeral Home; and Dr. Catherine Snyder, Freehold Township Board of Education. The council’s next fund-raiser will be "Taste of the Holidays" on Nov. 1.

The Holmdel Township Board of Education recently appointed Margaret Slayter to the position of interim director of student personnel services. Slayter has served as a guidance director since 1990, most recently at Monmouth Regional High School, Tinton Falls, where she has been since 1995. Prior to that, she held the same position at Raritan High School, Hazlet, and Holmdel High School. Slayter received her bachelor of arts degree at Peru (Neb.) State College, and her master’s at Boston State College.

The Equalizers, Leonardo section of Middletown, recently presented its Access Awards to six area individuals and companies for efforts to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The awards demonstrate the range accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, such as full access at a new facility. Lieutenant Eugene Hannafey, the Middletown Police Depart­ment training coordinator, was honored for exhibiting strong support of building safety and ac­cessibility. Dr. David I. Drout of Riverview Medical Associates, Tinton Falls, was recognized for design­ing ac­cessible facilities that reflect em­pathy and acceptance for disabled indi­viduals. Middletown Animal Hospital was recog­nized for renovating the hospi­tal — as well as the employee work area — into a more accessible facility. Nauvoo Bar and Grill Club, Fair Haven, was rec­ognized for renovations such as an eleva­tor, park­ing and bathrooms that resulted in an ac­cessible restaurant. Guenter Klose of Klose Training, Red Bank, al­though not working in an accessible of­fice, was hon­ored for volunteering to provide treat­ment at a local resident’s home. Adler Family Dental, Aberdeen, possesses lim­ited accessibility, but was recognized for features such as a high toilet, grab bars, door and faucet-level handles in its bath­room, and wheelchair access in the dental chair.

The Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts Inc., Farmingdale, has launched its first online fund-raising initiative, "Commit To A Girl." The three-year-long campaign will features a new Web site, www.CommitToAGirl.org, with informa­tion on the challenges girls face locally and nationally, and opportunities to sup­port scouting locally and nationally. The Scout program in Monmouth and North­ern Ocean counties addresses con­cerns about peer pressure, self-esteem, body image, career development, creative writing, dating, bullying, stress and other issues. The Web site will allow vis­itors to make a donation to the Mon­mouth Coun­cil of Girl Scouts, create a "Commit To A Girl" page that can be customized to honor a loved one, contact old friends, cel­ebrate a birthday, sign up for a book club, or even host a virtual fund-raising party. Dipika T. Shah, DDS, Holmdel, re­cently received the Academy of General Dentistry’s (AGD) Mastership Award during the Academy’s annual meeting July 10 in Anaheim, Calif. To earn the honor, Shah completed 1,100 hours of continuing dental education in the 16 disciplines of dentistry. She joins 1,900 practitioners in the United States and Canada that have received the award. Shah has practiced dentistry 25 years, and is a graduate of New York Univer­sity School of Dentistry. Shah is a mem­ber of both the AGD and American Den­tal Association, has served as past presi­dent of Monmouth Ocean County Dental Society and as a delegate for New Jersey Dental Association. She has been in na­tional registers of "Who’s Who" in execu­tives and professionals, and is listed in the Consumer Research Council of Amer­ica’s "Guide to America’s Top Dentists." A volunteer for Donated Dental Services of New Jersey, Shah has two children currently attending college.

Bayshore Community Hospital, 727 N. Beers St., Holmdel, will offer a diabetes self-management program, which will consist of individual and group sessions led by certified diabetes educators, a registered nurse, registered dietitian, physical therapist and a social worker. Upon completion, instructors will perform an evaluation, and will fol­low up with patients three months later to assess progress.
