Obituaries Ann “Betty” E. Meyer Pettinato Mrs. Pettinato, 76, of Albrightsville, Pa., and formerly Union Beach, died Nov. 22 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Bethlehem, Pa. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Union Beach prior to moving to Albrightsville six years ago. She was employed in the ladies fashion area at Bradlees, Hazlet, for 10 years, retiring in 1992. She was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was a member of Keyport Elks Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony J. Pettinato in 1998; a sister, Kathryn Donohue; and a brother-in-law, James E. Donohue. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Ronald Ellsworth, of the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, Susan and Robert Dane, of Keyport, Katherine and Martin Ziolkowski, of Albrightsville, Pa., with whom she resided, and Mary and Sal Pecora, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Patricia Pettinato, of Union Beach, Robert and Lisa Pettinato, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, and Joseph Pettinato of Freehold and Debra Pettinato, of Split Rock, Pa.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Nov. 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral service will be Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Anthony L. Chiaramonte Mr. Chiaramonte, 74, of Middletown, died Nov. 18 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had been a resident of Middletown for the past 20 years. Mr. Chiaramonte was a postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Bath Beach, Brooklyn, before his retirement. Prior to that, he was a controller for data processing at S. Klines, New York City. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. Mr. Chiaramonte was predeceased by his wife, Lucy Cartelli Chiaramonte, in 1989; a brother, Joseph; and a sister, Rose. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Rosemary Trent of Lynchburg, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lorraine Chiaramonte, and Donna Chiaramonte-Kelly and John Kelly Jr., all of Middletown; two sisters, Jean DeStefano of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Betty Passaro of Hilton Head, S.C.; and two grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, followed by burial at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.
Robert H. Shaffer Mr. Shaffer, 83, of Hazlet, died Nov. 27 at Holmdel Healthcare Center. Born in Great Bend, Kan., he had resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Hazlet. Mr. Shaffer was a container maintenance manager at Maersk Inc., Elizabeth, before his retirement. Prior to that, he was a terminal manager, truck driver and mechanic at Central New York Freightways for 25 years, and owned an auto body repair shop. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife of 61 years, Geraldine Jenkins Shaffer; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and James Burk of Greenville, N.C., Patricia and Donald Ross of Crest Hill, Ill., and Kim and Charles Daetz of Oceanport; a sister, Marian E. Shaffer of Surprise, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Dec. 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Entombment will follow at Holmdel Mausoleum.
Christopher J. Russo Mr. Russo, 31, of Arlington, Mass., died Nov. 25 in Boston. Born in Red Bank, he had resided in Middletown and Atlantic Highlands before moving to Arlington three years ago. Mr. Russo was an admissions counselor at Cambridge (Mass.) College the past year. He is survived by his parents, Mary Ann and Kenneth Russo; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Holly Russo of Middletown; his grandmothers, Margaret Dembowki and Olympia Russo, both of Jersey City; a niece; an aunt; an uncle; and several cousins. A funeral gathering will be held Dec. 1 at 8:15 a.m. at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Burial will follow at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
Richard J. Lapham Mr. Lapham, 77, of Middletown, died Nov. 27 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was a retired electrical engineer at Bendix Corp., Eatontown, where he was employed 37 years, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Eatontown. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Middletown Reformed Church; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Port Monmouth section of Middletown; and American Legion Post No. 338, Leonardo section of Middletown. Mr. Lapham was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Lapham, in 1976. He is survived by his companion, Marsha Giger of the Belford section of Middletown; a son, Richard J. Lapham of Louisiana; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Triem of Normall, Ill.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Visitation will take place Dec. 1 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral service will be held Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Middletown Reformed Church. Eleanor V. Quinn Mrs. Quinn, 77, of Lebanon Borough, died Nov. 17 at the home of her son in Matawan. She resided in Bridgewater before moving to Lebanon Borough. Mrs. Quinn was chief of statistical sampling at General Services Administration, Belle Mead, before her retirement. She also volunteered as a church secretary at Musconetcong Valley Presbyterian Church, Hampton. Prior to that, she was secretary and treasurer at Lebanon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Quinn was predeceased by a brother, Martin Van Orden Jr., in 1972. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Susan Quinn of Matawan; a sister, Norma Walls of Lebanon; a sister-in-law, Doris Van Orden of Bridgewater; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Musconetcong Church. Arrangements were by Waitt-Nelms Funeral Home, Morganville. John Henry “Bud” Max Mr. Max, 88, of Brick, died Nov. 18 in Keansburg. Born in Newark, he had resided in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Hilton Head, S.C., Atlantic Highlands and Scotch Plains before moving to Brick 15 years ago. Mr. Max was district manager of the lamp division at Westinghouse Electric Corp., Bloomfield, retiring after 34 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and prior to that he had served in the New Jersey National Guard Cavalry Unit. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, an active member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Brick, Master Mason of Monmouth Lodge No. 172 Free and Accepted Masons of New Jersey District 16, and 32nd Degree Mason, Atlantic Highlands. He also delivered Meals on Wheels. Mr. Max was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Olga Costanzo Max; and two sisters, Louise Bratsch and Florence MacConchie. He is survived by a son, Laurence J. Max of East Lansing, Mich.; a daughter, Harriet J. Fish of the Leonardo section of Middletown; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church, and a Masonic service was held at the Masonic Temple, Atlantic Highlands. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.
