Joseph J. Penniplede

Mr. Penniplede, 59, of Matawan, died Dec. 26 at his home. Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Union City before moving to Matawan 34 years ago. He was a Union City fireman for 27 years, retiring 9 years ago, and had previously been a Union City police officer for five years. Mr. Penniplede was a five-term councilman for the Matawan Borough Council, where he also served as council president. He was a former Matawan Police Commissioner and was a member of the Freneau Fire Department, Matawan. He also was president of the Firemen’s Relief Fund of Union City. He was owner and operator of John & Sons Car Wash, Union City, and co-owner of Brielle Sports Club, Brielle. Mr. Penniplede is survived by a son, Joseph A. Penniplede of Wall; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Corey Pitts of Matawan; a brother, John Penniplede; a sister, Linda Calieni; and one grandson. Visitation will be held at Matawan Borough Hall, Broad Street, Dec. 29 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by entombment at St. Joseph’s Mausoleum, both Keyport. The Day Funeral Home, Keyport, is in charge of arrangements.

Gloria Masia Erxleben

Mrs. Erxleben, 75, of Keyport died Dec. 24 at her home. Born in Bayonne, she had been a resident of Keyport for 58 years. Mrs. Erxleben was an inspector tester at Western Electric, Kearny, for 35 years. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport, where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Rosarians. She also was a member of the Pioneers of America. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Erxleben, in 1956; and a brother, Rudolph Masia. Surviving are a brother, Angelo Masia of Keyport; three sisters, Lucy Furmato of Cliffwood Beach, Rosemary Pettyjohn of Matawan and Sylvia Arotin of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Masia; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Visitation will be held Dec. 30 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 31 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, both Keyport.

Edward Cardoza Sr.

Mr. Cardoza, 84, of Union Beach died Dec. 26 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Fall River, Mass., he had resided in Newark and Kearny before moving to Union Beach in 1950. Mr. Cardoza was a shipping clerk for Captainer Plastics, Cedar Grove, before his retirement in 1985. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Mr. Cardoza was predeceased by his wife, Eveline Cardoza, in 1981. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Maria Cardoza Jr. of Middletown, and Richard and Deborah Cardoza of Union Beach; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Paul Smith of Union Beach; a brother, Frank Cardoza of Kearny; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Dec. 29 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 30 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church, followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.

Marian R. White

Mrs. White, 76, of Middletown, died Dec. 15. Born in Jersey City, she resided there prior to moving to Middletown six years ago. She was a retired clerk at Hudson County Welfare Department, where she was employed 15 years. She is survived by her former husband, Donald White of Ridgefield Park; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Dolores White Jr. of Glen Rock, Richard and Mary White of Kearny, and Robert and Ann White of Manalapan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Joseph Ilian of Chicago, and Janet and Gregory White-DePaul of Matawan; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.

Kenneth J. Bottino

Mr. Bottino, 75, of the Leonardo section of Middletown, died Dec. 16 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Leonardo, he was a lifelong resident of Middletown. Mr. Bottino was an insurance agent at Prudential, Middletown, for 30 years, retiring 20 years ago. He was a founding member of the Leonardo First Aid Squad. Mr. Bottino was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Bottino, in 1997; and a brother, Warren Bottino, in 1996. He is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Ellen and Douglas O’Brien, and Ginnie Bottino, all of New Hampshire, and Eileen Bottino of Morris Plains; a sister, Lorraine Craft of Marlton; a brother, Jerome Barton of Michigan; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Atlantic Highlands. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.

Vera V. Podice Williams

Mrs. Williams, 96, of Montville, died Dec. 16 at Troy Hills Center, Parsippany. Born in Italy, she resided in Union Beach and Keyport prior to moving to Montville. She was a retired bookkeeper at Strathmore Lanes, Aberdeen. She was a member of the Keyport Historical Society, Keyport Senior Citizens, Keyport Democratic Club, and the Golden Age Club, Union Beach. She was predeceased by a son, Walter John “Jack” Williams; a brother, Michael Podice; a sister, Mary Laurite; a granddaughter, Kim Carp; and a son-in-law, George Daly. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Daly of Montville; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Mary D. Williams of Fair Haven; a daughter-in-law, Diane Salmon; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Carmella Podice of Verona; a sister, Anne Campbell of Winchester, Va.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.

Norman A. Whiteman

Mr. Whiteman, 63, formerly of Middletown, died Dec. 17 in Hudson, Fla. Born and raised in Jim Thorpe, Pa., he had been a resident of Middletown from 1966 until moving to Florida upon his retirement. Mr. Whiteman was a supervisor for Eastern Airlines, Newark, for 24 years, and later worked at the Middletown Department of Public Works. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3402, Keyport; and maintained his Coast Guard Auxiliary membership in Flotilla 24. He also was active in the Middletown Youth Athletic Association for many years. Mr. Whiteman is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carol Whiteman of Hudson; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Norman and Laura Whiteman of Hazlet, Mike and Tammy Whiteman of Atlantic Highlands, Bill Whiteman of Norfolk, Va., and Jim and Mary Whiteman of Riverview, Fla.; a daughter, Allyson Whiteman of Hudson; a brother, Dennis Whiteman of Minnesota; and nine grandchildren. Patricia Ann Casey Burgio

Mrs. Burgio, 58, of Teaneck, died Dec. 19 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy. Born in Englewood, she resided in Bergenfield and Fords before moving to Teaneck. Mrs. Burgio was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her father, Arthur Casey. She is survived by her mother, Gertrude Kesnig of Spring Hill, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia Drobish of Middletown; a son, Frank Burgio of Middlesex County; three sisters, Sharon Walsh of Bergen County, Michelle Casey of Spring Hill, Fla., and Candy Frey of Florida; a brother, Robert Kesnig of Bergen County; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.
