Obituaries Thomas V. Riley Mr. Riley, 71, of Hazlet, died June 30 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Queens, N.Y., and Union Beach prior to moving to Hazlet six years ago. He was a locksmith at National Hardware, Queens. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vincenzia Noto Riley of Hazlet; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Mary Riley Jr. of Middletown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Stephen Jarosak of Union Beach, and Susan and Patrick O’Reilly of Waretown; two sisters, Ethel Riley of New Jersey, and Patricia Riley of Queens, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Laura A. Cruz Mrs. Cruz, 50, of Red Bank, died July 5 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she resided in the Monmouth County area since 1990. She was a secretary at Richmond Orthopedics, Richmond, Staten Island, the past 30 years. She also worked at the office of Dr. Angelo Scotti, Little Silver, for five years. She enjoyed time with her family. She was predeceased by her parents, Marilyn Hough and Francis A. Perrone. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Robert Cruz; two daughters, Melissa Cruz of Highlands, and Jennifer Cruz of Keyport; a son, Robert Cruz Jr. of Red Bank; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Natalie Perrone of Middletown, and Stephen and Marianne Perrone of Linden; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be July 7 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral gathering will be July 8 at 8:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial will be at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
Rosemarie A. Fahy Calton Mrs. Calton, 80, of Hazlet, died June 9 in Hazlet. Born in Rickville Center, N.Y., she resided in Jersey City 45 years prior to moving to Hazlet. She was a retired insurance agent and underwriter. She was a communicant of and president of the Rosary Altar Society at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was a member of the Garden Club of Hazlet, and enjoyed time with her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Calton Jr., June 9. She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Dickerson of Hazlet; three sons, John Calton of Oceanport, Robert “Bobby” Calton III of Long Branch and Richard “Whitey” Calton of Staten Island, N.Y.; a sister, Helen M. Fahy of Withsville, Va.; and three grandchildren. A memorial Mass was celebrated at Holy Family Church. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick 08902. Henry J. Kress Mr. Kress, 86, of Manchester, died July 4 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Linden before moving to Manchester. He also had a residence in West Palm Beach, Fla. Mr. Kress was assistant to the vice president at Bankers Trust, New York City, from 1947 until his retirement in 1981. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a delegate for the Polish National Alliance of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Kress was predeceased by a brother, Alfonse Kryszyski, and a sister, Wanda Tylicki. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Rees Kress; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jack Deshefy of Toms River, and Susan and Carlo Buffa of Middletown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard H. and Cheryl Kress of Mountainside, and Kenneth and Mary Kress of Middletown; a sister, Katherine Glowacki of New York City; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will take place July 7 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral gathering will be held July 8 at 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Brian M. Maltais Mr. Maltais, 34, of Schuykill Haven, Pa., and formerly Matawan and Aberdeen, died July 2 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pa. Born in Eatontown, he resided in Matawan and Aberdeen prior to moving to Schuykill Haven four years ago. He was the owner and operator of H.M.R. Landscaping, Matawan, the past 14 years. He enjoyed time with his family, and music. He was predeceased by his father, William Maltais; and an infant nephew, John Daniel Frye. He is survived by his mother, Nancy C. Maltais; three daughters, Rachel, Hayley and Tara Grace, all of Schuykill Haven, Pa.; his grandparents, Caroline and Ralph Duncan of Matawan; a brother, Daniel G. Maltais of Pottsville, Pa.; a sister, Rebecca Maltais of Keansburg; two uncles; and one cousin; and one niece. A funeral service will be July 9 at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Keyport. Virginia M. Black Bryne Mrs. Bryne, 89, of Matawan, died July 2 at Victoria Health Care, Matawan. Born in the Leonardo section of Middletown, she resided in Hazlet before moving to Matawan several years ago. Mrs. Bryne is survived by a daughter, Joan V. Vecchio of East Brunswick; a sister, Rosalind Kessling; and a brother, James T. Black. Visitation will take place July 7 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral service will be held at 11:15 a.m. at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
Julia M. Kokosinski Mrs. Kokosinski, 91, of the Belford section of Middletown, died June 27 at Regency Park Nursing Center, Hazlet. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Saranac Lake, N.Y., before moving to Belford three years ago. Mrs. Kokosinski was a machine operator at Western Electric, Harrison, where she was employed several years before retiring. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore, in 1989. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Janet Kokosinski of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Joan and Joseph Geryk of Belford; a sister, Violet Mulvey of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, followed by burial at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Saranac Lake, N.Y. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements. Anna M. Straniero Cannizzaro Mrs. Cannizzaro, 82, of Hazlet, died June 28 at Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Keansburg prior to moving to Hazlet in 1958. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. She was a member of the Hazlet Seniors, Holy Family Golden Age Club, and St. Clement’s Seniors. She was predeceased by her husband, Sebastiano Cannizzaro in 2004; and a brother, Gino Straniero in 2000. She is survived by two sons, Michael S. Cannizzaro of Hazlet, and Robert P. Cannizzaro of Naples, Fla.; a daughter, Janet Mancini of Brick; a sister, Lena Pallitto of Hazlet; five brothers, Sam Straniero and John Straniero, both of Hazlet; Joseph Straniero of Middletown; Nicholas Straniero of Interlachen, Fla.; and Anthony Straniero of Madison, Ala.; and five grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Ann’s Church. Entombment was at St. Joseph’s Mausoleum, Keyport. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
Nerina Spadaro Nicoll Mrs. Nicoll, 83, of Matawan, died June 28 at Victoria Health Care, Matawan. Born in Trieste, Italy, she resided in Brooklyn and Staten Island, N.Y., and Cranbury prior to moving to Matawan two years ago. She was a retired clerical worker at a local office. Prior to that, she was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, William Nicoll Sr. in 1995. She is survived by two sons, William Nicoll Jr. of Staten Island, N.Y., and Steven Nicoll of Webster, N.Y.; a daughter, Elaine Cangiarella of the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. Entombment was at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
Kevin J. Cunningham Mr. Cunningham, 44, of Belmar, died June 28 at home. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he resided in Jackson and the Belford section of Middletown prior to moving to Belmar six years ago. He was a heating and air conditioning technician at Joe Hurley Inc., Manahawkin, for 15 years. He served with the U.S. Army. He was predeceased by his parents, Kathleen Brothers Cunningham and Alexander Cunningham, and a sister, Kathleen Cunningham. He is survived by a son, Kevin Joseph Cunningham of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown; two daughters, Caroline Kathleen Cunningham and Anna Marie Cunningham, both of Port Monmouth; a brother, John Cunningham of the Leonardo section of Middletown; three sisters, Kelly Miller of Middletown, Christine Reynolds of Woodruff, S.C., and Mary Palmer of Port Monmouth; and his former wife, Carolyn Carusotto of Port Monmouth. Alex Gentile Mr. Gentile, 43, of Hazlet, died June 28 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided there prior to moving to Hazlet 17 years ago. He was vice president of systems at Alliance, Secaucus, where he was employed the past 20 years. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. He was predeceased by his father, Carmelo Gentile. He is survived by his mother, Felicia Pomponio Gentile of Marlboro; his wife, Lisa Giarratana Gentile of Hazlet; three children, Danielle, Jessica and Alex Gentile, all at home; and a sister, Marie Gagliardi of Marlboro. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Family Church. Entombment was at Holmdel Mausoleum. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Otto P. Hadel Mr. Hadel, 90, of Keansburg, died June 28 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Long Island, N.Y., he resided in Roselle prior to moving to Keansburg 40 years ago. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Roselle, for 40 years, retiring 25 years ago. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. He enjoyed time with his family, and horse racing. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary O’Connor Hadel in 1996. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Donna Hadel of Middletown, and Christopher and Joy Hadel of Holmdel; a daughter and son-in-law, Bridget and Leslie Neiman of the Belford section of Middletown; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Ann’s Church. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Newark. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
