Obituaries David E. Leach Jr. Mr. Leach, 85, of Avon, died July 16. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived there until he retired in 1982 and moved to Avon, where he had spent many summers with his family. He was a buyer for Hammacher Schlemmer, B. Altman & Co., Plummer McCutcheon, Benziger Bros. and the Navy Resale and Services Support Office. He graduated from St. Francis College, Brooklyn, earning a bachelor of arts degree in history. He then pursued postgraduate study in mechanical engineering at Manhattan College, Riverdale, N.Y., before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. For more than 50 years, he was a communicant of the Church of St. Elizabeth in Avon, where he belonged to the Holy Name Society and also served as an acolyte and an extraordinary minister. In addition, he was a member of the Avon Leisure Club. Mr. Leach was predeceased in 1966 by his wife, Mary Sullivan Leach. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dennis Suszkowski of Freehold, and Peggy and Joseph Scalise of both Avon and Rome, Italy; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Maureen Leach of Freehold Township; six grandchildren, Laura and David Detrick of Newark, Del., Alessandra Scalise of Avon and Rome, and David, Brendan and Caitlin; and a great-granddaughter, Caroline Marie Detrick. Visiting hours were scheduled for Tuesday, July 19, from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 20, at St. Elizabeth Church, followed by burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Spring Lake. Michael E. Trivett Jr. Mr. Trivett, 20, of the Belford section of Middletown, died July 16 at home. Born in Point Pleasant, he resided in Belford most of his life. He was an electrician employed at a local electrician the past two years. He was a graduate of Middletown High School North. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He enjoyed surfing, snowboarding and sports. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, William Flachsenhaar and Richard Trivett. He is survived by his parents, Barbara and Michael Trivett Sr. of Belford; a brother and sister, Brian and Meghan Trivett, both at home; and his grandmothers, Barbara Flachsenhaar of Belford, and Mary Trivett of Middletown. A funeral gathering will be July 20 at 10:15 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. David L. Zeni Mr. Zeni, 44, of Hazlet, died July 16 at Atlantic City Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Matawan prior to moving to Hazlet 10 years ago. He was the owner and operator of Certified Building Maintenance Co., Hazlet. He enjoyed golf, fishing and rooting for the New York Giants. He is survived by his wife, Maria Zeni of Hazlet; two daughters and a son, Christina, Lisa and Matthew Zeni, all at home; his parents, Mary and Louis Zeni of Matawan; a sister and brother-in-law, Lou Ann and Joseph Coletti of Parlin; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Desiree Zeni of Alexandria, Va.; and a niece. A Mass of Christian Burial will be July 20 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. Interment will follow at the church’s cemetery. Arrangements are by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
Grace Gertrude August Mrs. August, 67, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died July 12 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy. Born in Malden, Mass., she resided in Port Monmouth most of her life. She was a home health aide at Pace, Carteret, for five years, retiring in 2003. She was also a homemaker. She enjoyed bingo. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Kenneth Falkenberg of Carteret, and Susan and Anthony Sherman of Port Monmouth; four sons and daughters-in-law, William and Lisa August of Howell, Matthew and Deborah August of Middletown, Lance and Jane August of Lanoka Harbor, and Manuel and Dawn August of Farmingdale; three brothers, Lawrence Robson of Florida, Richard Robson of Massachusetts, and Sonny Robson of Maine; and 14 grandchildren. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
Marion M. Scriven Mrs. Scriven, 91, of Middletown, died July 12 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Beaver Dam, Wis., she resided in Beloit, Wis., prior to moving to Middletown in 2004. She was employed at a Wisconsin telephone company for several years. She was predeceased by her husband, Vernon Scriven in 1974. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Raymond Breault of Red Bank; a sister, Sr. Gloria Higgins of Rockford, Ill.; a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Lucia Higgins of Las Vegas; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. Randy W. Serkus Mr. Serkus, 44, of the Leonardo section of Middletown, died July 12 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, he was a lifelong resident of the local area. He was a chemical operator at International Flavors and Fragrances, Hazlet. He served with the U.S. Navy during peacetime. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Serkus. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Provina of Florida; his wife, Irene DeWysockie Serkus of Union Beach; a daughter and son, Sara and Robert Serkus at home; his fiancée, Laura Peterson of Leonardo, with whom he resided; two sisters, Christine Micholas of Asbury Park, and Sherry Serkus-Miller of Union Beach; two brothers, Steven Serkus and William Serkus, both Union Beach; and his fiancée’s four children. Interment was at Forest Green Cemetery, Marlboro. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Margaret C. Sullivan Mrs. Sullivan, 88, of Tomasso Plaza, Middletown, died July 16 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Keansburg prior to moving to Middletown in 1998. She was a retired waitress at the Mermaid Diner, and Wagon Wheel, Keansburg, where she was employed several years. She was an inspector for Army regulations at Air Reduction-Pacific, Jersey City, during World War II. She was honored with a Rosie the Riveter award in 2000. She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. She was a member of the T. Edward Kinlin Association, and Hazlet Senior Citizens. She was predeceased by her husband, John L. Sullivan in 1990. She is survived by a sister, Terry Ciani of Jersey City; a brother, Edward Joyce of San Diego; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Scott Edwards of Temple, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Angela Sullivan of the New Monmouth section of Middletown, and Thomas and Linda Sullivan of Brick; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held July 20 at 9 a.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will follow at 10:15 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, followed by burial at Shoreland Memorial Park, Hazlet.
