Community Bulletin Board Middletown Parks & Recreation will hold World Trade Center memorial events Sept. 10. Events will begin with a Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Atlantic Highlands, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Leonardo WTC memorial next to the Leonardo Marina on Concord Avenue, Leonardo section of Middletown. Aberdeen rec. sets senior trip to Platzl Brauhaus The Aberdeen Township Recreation Department has scheduled a senior citizens trip to Platzl Brauhaus in Pomona, N.Y., on Oct. 18. The cost of the trip, $39 for residents and $44 for nonresidents, includes lunch and dinner, use of Platzl Brauhaus’ recreational facilities and entertainment. The trip is open to Aberdeen seniors ages 55 and older. Nonresidents can sign up after the resident deadline if space is available. The deadline for registration is Sept. 13. Participants are asked to indicate their dinner choice (chicken or pork) when signing up for the trip. Buses will depart from the A&P shopping center on Route 35 in Cliffwood at 8:30 a.m. and from the parking lot of Temple Shalom, located on Ayrmont Lane and Church Street, at 9 a.m. Buses will return home at approximately 8 p.m. All trips are nonrefundable. Checks should be made payable to Aberdeen Recreation. Township seniors who are members of the VFW Senior Citizen Club are asked to sign up at the club meeting. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post. No. 4247, Third and Waverly Streets, Keyport, will hold its annual family picnic Sept. 10 from 1-6 p.m. at the Post home. Cost is $10, $6 for children age 6-12, and free for children age 5 and younger. The event will feature various foods and beverages, music, games and other activities. The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation will host a slide show and book discussion by Vietnam veteran Thomas E. Morrissey Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Vietnam Era Educational Center, Holmdel. Morrissey is the author and photographer of “Between the Lines: Photographs from the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial.” He served in Vietnam from 1970-71, was combat decorated and honorably discharged at the rank of chief warrant officer. Fossil hunts at Poricy Park Sept. 11, Oct. 9
Poricy Park, Oak Hill Road, Middletown, will hold family fossil hunts Sept. 11 and Oct. 9 beginning at the nature center. Cost is $5 per person, and attendees should dress for the weather, wear rubber boots or old sneakers, and bring a container for finds. Recommended for children older than age 5. Interpreters Julee Csuri and Sara Winchell will demonstrate how to color yarns and garments the Colonial way Sept. 18 from 1-2:30 p.m. The free program will be at the Murray Farmhouse. “Babes in the Woods” for children age 2-3 with a parent will be offered Sept. 19 and 26, and Oct. 3, 17, 24 and 31 from 9:45-11 a.m. (no class Oct. 10). The program will feature walks, songs, crafts and games. Strollers are suggested for convenience, and no siblings, please. Cost is $72 for nonmembers, and $54 for members. Programs are at the annex. “Little Acorns” for children age 4-5 will be held Sept. 20 and 27, Oct. 11, 18 and 25, and Nov. 1 from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the annex (no class Oct. 4). Attendees will take walks around Poricy and search for interesting signs of the park’s plants and animals. Crafts and stories will also be included in the program. Cost is $96 for nonmembers and $72 for members. “Nature Kids” for kindergartners will be offered Sept. 22 and 29, Oct. 6, 20 and 27, and Nov. 3 from 1-2:15 p.m. at the annex (no class Oct. 13). Attendees will walk the park’s trails and explore different habitats. Crafts, stories and games will also be included. Fee is $96 for nonmembers and $72 for members. The nonprofit Matawan Student Enrichment Program (MSEP) has announced it has added new science courses to its curriculum, with all classes beginning Oct. 1. Classes are offered for children in grades K-12, and are held at either Lloyd Road or Strathmore Schools, Matawan. New this year will be “Basic Aerospace Modeling,” and “Grossology,” which will detail the human body through various “tours.” Three cooking classes will also be offered Saturdays, in addition to MSEP’s arts, science and crafts classes.
