The Matawan-Aberdeen 10-year-old baseball all-stars successfully defended their District 11 championship. The Huskies went on to the state tournament in Jersey City, where they were eliminated with a respectable 2-2 record. The highlight was an exciting win over Bayonne; a seven-inning win over Bayonne's ace pitcher. The Huskies also went on to take first place in the South Amboy Tournament, and scored 40 runs in the North Edison Tournament, where they lost twice to the two-time state championship team from Cranford. Their final record was 11-5, with three losses coming to Cranford. The team consists of first basemen and pitchers Ryan Branagan and Dom Felipo, catcher Joe Piscopo, third baseman Justin "Big Jim" Henderson, shortstop Michael Creamer, second basemen Nick Santuccio and Pat Scaglione, center fielder and relief pitcher Tyler Perlowin, right fielder Tyler Birch, left fielder/first baseman Nick Tompkins and left fielder Justin Sandy. The team is managed by Jim Murph Branagan and coached by Steve Tompkins, Tim Birch and Mike Creamer. The Hazlet Youth Athletic League will hold registration for its basketball and wrestling leagues early next month. The in-town basketball rec league for boys ages 7-18 and girls ages 7-15 and traveling teams (Mid-Monmouth - boys and girls 11U, 13U; and Monmouth Youth - boys 8, 9, 10 and 12 and girls 9U) will take place at the Hazlet Middle School cafeteria (Union Avenue) Sept. 19 and 26, 7-9 p.m., and Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Raritan High School cafeteria. Birthday cutoff for the rec program is Aug. 31. Birthday cutoff for Mid-Monmouth and Monmouth Youth is Aug. 1. Proof of age and residency (driver's license not accepted) is required for all new registrants in the program. Registration fees are $75 for one child, $110 for two, and $145 for three or more children. A $50 refundable work deposit is required. Call (732) 264-3060, ext. 5, for more information. Middletown MYAA will hold tryouts for boys' and girls' Mid Monmouth travel teams. All participants must reside in the Middletown North sending district. Girls tryouts are today for fifth and sixth grade from 6-7:30 p.m., and seventh and eighth grade from 7:30-9 p.m. at Thorne Middle School. Boys' tryouts are tomorrow for Thursday for fifth and sixth grade (6-7:30 p.m.), and seventh and eighth grade (7:30-9 p.m.) at Thorne Middle School.
