Barham selected to lead freeholder board in ’06
FREEHOLD — Freeholder William C. Barham has been chosen director of the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders for 2006. Freeholder Robert D. Clifton is the deputy director.
During the 2006 annual organization meeting last week, the freeholders also welcomed their newest member, Colts Neck resident Lillian G. Burry, who was elected along with Barham in November. Both were sworn in to three-year terms on the freeholder board.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the wonderful residents of Monmouth County,” Barham said. “We must continue to provide the quality of life our residents expect and deserve while maintaining a fiscally responsible attitude. Our challengers are great, but I am up to the job.”
Burry promised to redefine the role of county government, control spending and help build a better Board of Freeholders.
“We must effect change only with sound reason and measured thought,” Burry said. “Business as usual? Certainly not. Ignoring the accomplishments of the past? Certainly not. Spending without thought to consequences? Certainly not. Ignoring the need to earn the public’s trust? Certainly not.”
Barham, 53, is a resident of Monmouth Beach. He was appointed in December 2004 to fill the unexpired term of longtime freeholder Harry W. Larrison.
Among the many challenges in 2006, Barham said changing how the county does business and promoting confidence in government are top priorities. He also said county government must operate beyond reproach, be open and honest and operate with the highest moral and ethical standards.
Clifton, of Matawan, said he is honored to be selected deputy director of the freeholder board, and he vowed to support Barham and Burry in their efforts to reduce spending.
Before joining the freeholder board, Barham served as the elected commissioner of public works in Monmouth Beach, where his responsibilities also included police and fire commissioner, all public works projects and sanitation. He is the chief operating officer of Thomas H. Barham Co. Inc., a contractor in New Jersey.
Burry is the broker of record at Colts Neck Realty. She and her husband, Don, have one daughter and two grandchildren. Burry is a member of the Colts Neck Township Committee.
Barham, Burry and Clifton are joined on the freeholder board by Amy Handlin, of Middletown, and Ted Narozanick, of Freehold Borough. All five freeholders are Republicans.
