Claire A. Crosby
Mrs. Crosby, 81, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died Jan. 1 at home. Born in Bayonne, she was a lifelong resident of Port Monmouth. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Crosby Sr. in 1996; a son, Vincent Crosby; two sisters, Irene Young and Elizabeth Etzkorn; and a brother, Harry Collins. She is survived by six sons and four daughters-in-law, Edward J. Crosby Jr. of Florida, and David and Hester Crosby, John and Patricia Crosby, Paul and Winnifred Crosby, Raymond Crosby, and James and Diane Crosby, all of Middletown; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jo and Martin Egan of Middletown; a sister, Joan Gifford of Spring Lake Heights; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Mary’s Church. Entombment was at Holmdel Mausoleum. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
Mary Calabrese
Mrs. Calabrese, 92, of Holmdel, died Jan. 7 at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there prior to moving to Holmdel three years ago. She was a retired seamstress in New York City. She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore in 1985. She is survived by a daughter, Jeanette Therese of Aberdeen; a son, John Calabrese of Nanuet, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y. Arrangements are by Waitt-Nelms Funeral Home, Morganville.
Barbara T. Piccirillo
Mrs. Piccirillo, 66, of Hazlet, died Jan. 1 at home. Born in Newark, she resided in Hazlet since 1967. She was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Piccirillo. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Dawn Piccirillo of Fort Mill, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Sean Dean of Florida; a sister, Eileen Watson of New Castle, Wash.; and three grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
Phyllis Wiederspan
Mrs. Wiederspan, 79, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Jan. 6 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Harrison, she had previously resided in Irvington and had lived in Belford for 33 years. Prior to retiring in 1995, she was a preparation person for Danny’s Pizza, Middletown, for 20 years. She was a homemaker, who had a passion for cooking and baking. Mrs. Wiederspan was predeceased by her husband, Henry, in 1991, as well as a brother, Thomas Sasso, and a sister, Anna Rose Grieco. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Paul Quirk of Belford; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Nicholas Cirigliano of South Plainfield, and Philip and Eileen Wiederspan of Jackson; a sister, Angelina Flanagan of the Parlin section of Sayreville; and three granddaughters and two grandsons. Catherine Theresa Cullen O’Malley
Mrs. O’Malley, 89, of Norwell, Mass., died Jan. 2 at South Shore Hospital, Weymouth, Mass. Born in New York City, she resided in Hazlet prior to moving to Norwell. She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas O’Malley in 1993. She is survived by two sons, John O’Malley of Palm Coast, Fla., and Vincent O’Malley of Point Pleasant two daughters, Mary Pietkewicz of Georgetown, S.C., and Kathryn Stolper of Norwell, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Antoinette F. Hendrickson
Mrs. Hendrickson, 82, of Middletown, died Jan. 7 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Long Branch, she resided in Middletown since 1956. She was a retired bookkeeper at Gibbs Hall, Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, where she was employed 20 yeas. Prior to that, she was employed at Westinghouse, Newark. She is survived by her husband, John G. Hendrickson; a son, John G. Hendrickson of Copiague, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maryann and Michael Rhodey of Bellevue, Wash., and Ruthann and Robert Womer of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Michael Cleffi of Lancaster, Pa.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral liturgy will be Jan. 11 at 9 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements are by John F. William Jensen Mason Sr.
Mr. Mason, 86, of Hazlet, died Jan. 1 at Care One, Holmdel. Born in Keyport, he resided in Hazlet the past 52 years, He was a custodian at Raritan Valley School System, Matawan. Prior to that, he was employed at Inter Chemical, Elizabeth, for more than 35 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church, Hazlet. He was an exempt fireman, and chief engineer at Hazlet Fire Company No. 1. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys Elizabeth Mason in 1998. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Barbara Mason Jr. of Howell; a daughter and son-in-law, Gladys E. and Charles Hoagland of Whiting; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Interment was at Green Grove Cemetery, Keyport. Arrangements were by Bedle Funeral Home, Keyport.
Adam B. Lovely Sr.
Mr. Lovely, 69, of South Amboy, died Jan. 4 at home. Born in South Amboy, he was a lifelong resident. He was employed 30 years at Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local No. 9, Tinton Falls, retiring 15 years ago. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, South Amboy. He was a member and current squad commander at Sons of the American Legion, Luke A. Lovely Post 62, South Amboy. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Lovely; and a sister, Theresa Dioguardi. He is survived by a son, Adam B. Lovely Jr. of Matawan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joan and Kevin Meszaros of West Long Branch, and Janet Lovely of Sayreville; two brothers, Thomas Lovely of Neptune, and James Lovely of Morgan; a sister, Mary Hayden of South Amboy; and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sayreville. Arrangements were by The Gundrum Service Home for Funerals, South Amboy.
Bronson James Sandford
Mr. Sandford, 27, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Jan. 4 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, he was a lifelong resident of Belford. He was a graduate of Middletown High School North. He is survived by his parents, Marlene and Harold Sandford of Middletown; a daughter, Briana Sandford of Middletown; a son, Bronson Sandford Jr. of Middletown; three sisters, Bridget, Brittany and Bethany Sandford, all of Middletown; three brothers, Benjamin, Blake and Brandon Sandford, all of Middletown; his maternal grandmother, Norma Persico; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty Loomis Smith
Mrs. Smith, 79, of Monmouth Beach, died Jan. 4 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she resided in Larchmont and Staten Island, N.Y., and Rumson, prior to moving to Monmouth Beach. She was a retired local travel agent, and also taught ESL and Spanish at Staten Island Academy. Prior to that, she was a passenger representative at the 20th Century Limited and Empire State Express trains in New York City. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, where she was also a Stephen Minister, and deacon. She was a member of the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York, and a recipient of its Woman of the Year Award. She volunteered for the Visiting Nurse Association, and Society for Seamen’s Children, Staten Island. She enjoyed travel, bridge, reading, and swimming. She is survived by her husband, David Smith; a son, David Smith Jr. of Eatontown; a two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Matt Singleton of Greenwich, Conn., and Gwendolyn and Michael Ellithorpe of Middletown; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sue Loomis of Somers, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church of Red Bank. Arrangements were by The Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. Lucille Faith Harris
Miss Harris, 85, of Middletown, died Dec. 21 at home. Born in Paterson, she relocated to Middletown in 1972. She was a retired proofreader at a court reporting firm, and prior to that, was employed by Earl Neusom, New York City, for more than 20 years. She was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Red Bank, where she was a member of the Women of Trinity. She was a member, and former secretary of the Navesink Garden Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, and travel. She is survived by five nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at Trinity church. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Cecelia Ann Stump Fahey
Mrs. Fahey, 57, of Springfield, Mass., and formerly Rumson, died Dec. 23 at home. Born in Long Branch, she resided in Springfield the past 32 years. She was a teacher for the City and Diocese of Springfield for 17 years, and a former teacher in Howell. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Springfield, and also served on the parish council. She was predeceased by her father, James D. Stump, and a sister, Helena Stump Burns. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, John M. Fahey; a daughter, Heather M. Fahey of Springfield, Mass.; a son, Seamus M. Fahey of Hawthorne; her mother, Helene Stump Clark of Red Bank; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Roger and Arlene Stump of Shrewsbury, James D. Stump of Newlin, N.C., and John and Linda Stump of Davidsonville, Md.; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mary Gartland of Middletown, Christine and Jay Carhart of Rumson, Roberta Stump of Santee, Calif., Suzanne and Don Strohmenger of Atlantic Highlands, and Jean and John Dull of Amityville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. William J. “Whopper” Walling Sr.
Mr. Walling, 50, of Vineland, died Dec. 24 at home. Born in Keyport, he resided in Marlton prior to moving to Vineland two years ago. He was plant manager at Egg Harbor Yacht Company since 2000. Prior to that, he was employed at Pacemarker Yacht Company. He enjoyed hunting, and fishing, and was an avid Giants fan. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Beverly DeWysockie Walling of Vineland; a son, William Walling Jr. of Vineland; a daughter, Jennifer Walling of Vineland; three brothers, Joseph Walling of Keyport, and Robert and Mark Walling, both of Newport Richey, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Eleanor Byrne Farrell Quinlan
Mrs. Quinlan, 88, of Middletown, died Dec. 27 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in West Orange, she resided in Jersey City, and Clark prior to moving to Shadow Lake Village in 1984. She was a retired secretary at Westfield Board of Education. Prior to that, she was an executive secretary at Grolier Publishing, and Shell Oil Co., New York City. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, and former parishioner at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She enjoyed golf and was a member of the Shadow Lake Women’s Golf Club, as well as the Socializers. She was predeceased by her husbands, Thomas Farrell and John Quinlan; and siblings Lucile, Edward, Carol and Robert. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Ellen and Dr. R. Gregory Quirk, Kathleen Farrell, Maureen and Dominic Campbell, and Patricia-Anne and Robert Beckman; a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Edward Connolly of Milford, Conn.; and 12 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church. Interment was at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery, Colonia. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. John A. Barrett
Mr. Barrett, 76, of Hazlet, died Dec. 28 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Hazlet since 1959. He was an electronics technician for the F.A.A., Newark Airport, the past 30 years. He served with the U.S.. Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea from 1946-50. He was a member and past president of the Irish Federation of Monmouth County, and was its Man of the Year in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Wirsing Barrett; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Teresa Barrett Jr. of Hazlet, and Edward and JeanMarie Barrett of Keansburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tommy Dayback of Tinton Falls; two sisters, Edna Keating of Staten Island, N.Y., and Doris Young of Tupelo, Miss.; a brother, Ronald Barrett of Howell; and 10 grandchildren. Elisabeth Gratt Masterson
Mrs. Masterson, 83, of Holmdel, died Dec. 29 at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel. Born in Langkampfen, Austria, where located to Germany, and moved to the United States in 1955. She resided in Toms River prior to moving to Holmdel. She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul Hager, and her husband, William Masterson. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul X. and Kathy Gratt of Middletown; two sisters, Gertrude Lando of Carmel, N.Y., and Kathi Winter of Assling, Germany; and three grandchildren. A funeral service was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
