Alzheimer's caregivers group meetings offered

The Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, will hold caregiver support group meetings Aug. 15 at First United Methodist Church, 91 W. Main St., Holmdel; and Bayshore Community Hospital, 727 N. Beers St., Holmdel. A meeting will also be held Aug. 24 at Brighton Gardens, 620 Route 35 south, Tinton Falls. All meetings are at 7 p.m.

Aberdeen family movie night slated for Aug. 3

Aberdeen Township Recreation Department will premiere its family movie night Aug. 3 at Giusti Park, Cliffwood Avenue (between Myrtle and Archie Streets). The event will begin at 7 p.m. with entertainment by Ronald McDonald, followed by the movie "Matilda" at 8:30 p.m.

It is sponsored by the Aberdeen McDonald's, and Cliffwood Beach McDonald's. The film is based on the novel by Roald Dahl, and stars Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman. The evening is free, and attendees may bring chairs or blankets. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

'Jesus Christ Superstar' slated at Hazlet church

St. John's United Methodist Church, 2000 Florence Ave., Hazlet, will present "Jesus Christ Superstar" Aug. 10, 11, 13, 17, 18 and 19 at 8 p.m.

Music director Peter Madpak and artistic director Melanie Taylor are co-producing the show in an effort to start a community theater in the area. Tickets are $12 for adults, and $10 for seniors and for children under 18 years of age. For tickets, call Debbie at (732) 264-1236.

Volunteers sought

for Meals on Wheels

The volunteer unit at Interfaith Neighbors is seeking volunteers with vehicles to help with delivery of midday Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors. Areas in particular need include Aberdeen, Keyport, Hazlet and Holmdel. Volunteers are needed for approximately one hour weekly or bimonthly.

SJS Foundation benefit yard sale Aug. 4, 5

A yard sale to benefit Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) Foundation in memory of Heather Rose Kiss will be Aug. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the home of Darlene Kiss, 54 Overlea Lane, Aberdeen.

Keyport Spanish-American festival Aug. 12

Organizacin Pro-Unidad Puertorriquea will present the Keyport Spanish-American festival Aug. 12 from noon to 8 p.m. at Beachfront Park, Broad and First streets. The raising of the Puerto Rican flag will take place at 11:30 a.m.

The free event will feature various foods, family activities and live entertainment, including Proyecto Clemente, Fiesta Baramaya, DJ Genio, and Los Salseritos.

VFW No. 2179 annual family picnic Aug. 6

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179 will host its annual family picnic Aug. 6 from noon to 6 p.m. at the post home, 1 Veterans Lane, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. Knights to host breakfast, beauty contest

St. Joseph's Council 3402 Knights of Columbus, 54 Route 35 north, Keyport, will hold its "Second Sunday Breakfast," family-style, 8:30-11 a.m. Aug. 13.

The eighth annual "$1.98 Beauty Contest and Dinner" fundraiser will be held Aug. 26 from 7 p.m. to midnight. The Knights are seeking contestants (mostly male, with a good sense of humor). The event will feature dinner, refreshments, open bar 7-11 p.m. (beer, wine and soda), and a DJ. The cost is $25, with proceeds benefiting the Knights of Columbus charity fund.

'Songwriters Sunday' begins Aug. 6 in Keyport

The Traveling Poets Society will present "Songwriters Sunday" beginning Aug. 6 with YoliAlto and Frank Glaz. Shows are 5-7 p.m. and are held outside Espresso Joe's, 50 W. Front St., Keyport.

An Elvis Presley tribute will be presented Aug. 13, and Brandon Hans and Brandon Kleiber will perform Aug. 20. The event concludes with Bob Andrews and DOUGS Aug. 27.

Chorus' 'summer sing' in Holmdel Aug. 7

The Monmouth Civic Chorus will hold a "summer sing" of religious music by popular composers Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 112 Middletown Road, Holmdel. The informal sing is an opportunity for the public to get to know the chorus and its director, Mark Shapiro. Admission is $5 and includes refreshments and score loan. Genealogy event Aug. 7 in Keyport

The Keyport Historical Society will host a genealogy presentation by Carole Grabowski featuring Elizabeth Walling, Nora Sanborn, Linda Kennedy and others, Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Vendor spaces available for motorcycle run Aug. 6

Middletown Elks Lodge No. 2179, 251 Church St., Belford section of Middletown, will hold a motorcycle run to benefit its Special Children's Committee Aug. 6. Sign-up is 9 a.m. The cost is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger.

The run will travel to Elks lodges from Middletown to Old Bridge, Freehold, Long Branch and back via Ocean Avenue. Following the run will be a street fair 1-4 p.m. featuring music, beer, and refreshments at the Belford lodge. Spots are still open for fair vendors. Register for Citizen Police Academy by Aug. 18

Monmouth County Sheriff Joseph W. Oxley announced that applications are being accepted for enrollment in the 12th annual Citizen Police Academy, which will be held Sept. 6-Nov. 8 at the Monmouth County Police Academy, Freehold Township. The deadline for applying is Aug. 18.

The free course is open to county residents age 21 and older, with no criminal record, and consists of 10 sessions, 7-9:30 p.m. Wednesdays. The academy is a 25-hour block of instruction designed to give attendees an overview of law enforcement services in Monmouth County and features presentations by municipal, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Residents must attend all 10 sessions for successful completion of the program. Enrollment is limited.

Host families sought for exchange students

Cultural Academic Student Exchange, Middletown, is seeking host families for high school exchange students from Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, China, Japan, Germany, Poland and Venezuela.

Reservations due Aug. 15 for Atlantic City trip

St. Mary's Travel Group, New Monmouth section of Middletown, is sponsoring a trip to see "Floor Play" at Tropicana Casino, Atlantic City, Aug. 22, with reservations prepaid before Aug. 15.

The cost is $22, which covers transportation, $10 rebate, and show ticket. The show is a musical variety show with dancing. The bus will depart from the parking lot at Mater Dei High School, Cherry Tree Farm Road, New Monmouth.
