Richard James Byrne Jr.

Mr. Byrne, 77, of Little Silver, died Aug. 6 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, he resided in Shrewsbury for 40 years before moving to Little Silver eight years ago. Mr. Byrne was the current manager of Concrete Resurfacing Inc., Shrewsbury. Prior to that, he was president of Walter C. Hurley Construction Co. Inc., Neptune. He served as a captain with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, where he was a former lector and past president of the parish council. Mr. Byrne was a member of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Board and the Diocese of Trenton Building Commission. He was also a member of the Notre Dame Club of the Jersey Shore and its Man of the Year in 1974. He also received the Fellowship Award for the Brotherhood of Christians and Jews. He was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Tierney. Mr. Byrne is survived by his wife of 51 years, Claire Maguire Byrne; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Richard J. and Marsha Byrne Jr. of Evanston, Ill., and Brother Frank Byrne, F.S.C. of the Lincroft section of Middletown; three daughters and sons-in-law, Regina and Jeff Ingrassia of Eatontown, Michele and Peter Visceglia of Red Bank, and Mary Clair and Greg Davis of Shrewsbury; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Jane Byrne; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary Louise Murphy, and Barbara and John Schulte; a brother-in-law, Richard Tierney; and 15 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. at St. James Church. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.

Walter D. Nychay

Mr. Nychay, 43, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died July 30 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Long Branch, he resided in Port Monmouth most of his life. Mr. Nychay was a draftsman at Blasland, Bouck & Lee Inc., Cranbury. He was predeceased by his father, Michael Nychay. He is survived by his mother, Rita Nychay of Port Monmouth; a brother, Michael Nychay of Howell; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Veronica Evernham of the Leonardo section of Middletown, and Debra and Michael McIntyer of Duluth, Minn.; and two daughters, Alexandria and Casandra Nychay. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond W. Allgeier

Mr. Allgeier, 61, of Keyport, died July 31 at home. Born in Irvington, he resided in the Iselin section of Woodbridge and in Keansburg before moving to Keyport 12 years ago. Mr. Allgeier was a signalman at Amtrak, Rahway, for several years. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Grace Allgeier; two stepdaughters, Genine and Aimee; a stepson, Drew; two brothers, Emil Allgeier and John Allgeier; and five grandchildren. Interment was at Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery, Union. The Day Funeral Home, Keyport, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard W. Smith

Mr. Smith, 90, of Key Largo, Fla., died July 31 in Florida. Born in Canton, Ohio, he resided in Bloomfield, Middletown, Rumson, and Williamsburg, Va., before moving to Florida this year. Mr. Smith was a greenhouse-manufacturing executive, and former president and co-founder with his late father, X.S. Smith, of X.S. Smith Inc., Eatontown. He was a member of nurserymen's associations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Masonic Temple, Navesink Lodge No. 9, Red Bank. He was an avid boater, woodworker, and golfer, and was also a private pilot. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his first wife, Doreen Parker Smith, in 1981; and a stepdaughter, Nadine Goldsmith. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sally Dexter Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. "Skip" and Giga Smith of Atlantic Highlands; two daughters and one son-in-law, Gail and William Blandeburgo of Easton, Pa., and Victoria Kerr of Mesa, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Laurie and her husband Alfred Greenblatt of Westport, Conn., and Cindy Dexter of Key Largo; a sister, Barbara Jane "B.J." Thompson of Fair Haven; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church of Rumson. Hans H. Froehlich

Mr. Froehlich, 85, of Spring Hill, Fla., and formerly of Aberdeen, died July 5 at Hernando/Pasco Hospice, Brooksville, Fla. Born in Munich, Germany, he relocated to the United States in 1939. He was employed in sales and advertising for several years. Mr. Froehlich was mayor of Aberdeen from 1968 to 1972 and served on the Township Council, Zoning Board, and Planning Board for several years during the 1960s and 1970s. He served with the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during World War II. He was a member of Guadalcanal Post No. 4745, Matawan, and served on several committees in Hernando County, Fla. Mr. Froehlich is survived by his wife, Irene; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Larry Force of Howell; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John Froehlich of Long Branch, and Thomas and Susan Froehlich of Spring Lake Heights; a stepdaughter, Nancy Ward of Bridgeton; a stepson, Gary Holst of Keystone, S.D.; four grandchildren; and a step-grandson. A memorial service was held in Florida, followed by burial with military honors at Florida National Veterans Cemetery, Bushnell. Arrangements were by Brewer & Sons Funeral Home, Spring Hill, Fla.
