Twp. man pleads guilty to aiming gun at officer
FREEHOLD - A Middletown man has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, after aiming a gun at a township police officer.
Kevin McKenna, 34, will face a mandatory 18-month sentence in state prison with no chance of parole for pointing a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun at an officer's head on Feb. 10. Although not identified by name in a Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office press release, Middletown police confirm the officer was Cpl. Craig Slocum.
According to the release, Slocum responded to a noise complaint at the McGuire's Grove Apartment complex. After knocking on the door and identifying himself, Slocum heard what he thought was a semi-automatic gun being pulled back to a firing position.
After backing down the stairs, Slocum was confronted by McKenna and pointed the gun at him. Slocum then drew his service weapon and ordered McKenna to put his weapon down. McKenna was deemed to be intoxicated at the time of the incident.
"By pointing a loaded gun at an armed officer, McKenna placed his own life at risk and endangered the safety of some residents of the apartment complex," Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin said. "This case represents a fine example of a police officer heroically protecting and serving a community."
McKenna will be sentenced on Jan. 19 by Superior Court Judge Bette E. Uhrmacher in Freehold.
