Police stationed at schools as precaution for threat
BY DAN NEWMAN
Staff Writer

MIDDLETOWN - Following a threat issued Oct. 31, township police were assigned to each of the district's 12 elementary schools through Monday.

The unspecified threat was issued by a person who had received a traffic summons and was unhappy with the police department, according to a statement issued by the school district.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Karen Bilbao, along with other central office administrators, met with police officials to discuss the matter and come up with ways to keep the schools safe.

"We evaluated our options and decided that having officers assigned to the elementary schools was the way to go," Bilbao said. "At some point, we will reassess the situation."

Bilbao mentioned that the threat was not directed toward any school in particular.

She also said that schools in other counties were threatened as well.

In the statement, which was issued on the district's Web site, it also said that local authorities were working with other municipalities around the state because there have been threats directed toward other districts in the state.

"Middletown was not the only district being targeted," she said. "Once we knew this, our concern was not as high."
