Two charged with giving alcohol to Mid'town teen
High school student died after collision with tree on Halloween

MIDDLETOWN - Two township residents have been charged with providing alcohol to two underage boys, one of whom recently died in a single car accident.

Matthew G. Muscenti, 19, of Thompson Avenue, and Jason M. Clark, 23, formerly of Monmouth Avenue, were arrested last week in connection with the death of 17-year-old Leonardo resident Patrick Basilicato.

He and another 17-year-old were traveling in a 2000 Dodge Durango on Halloween night when the pair struck a tree at the edge of Thompson Lane, a dirt and gravel road located near the entrance to Thompson Park, located on Newman Springs Road across from Christian Brothers Academy.

Basilicato, a junior at Middletown High School South, was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center and was pronounced dead two days later.

In the course of the investigation, police determined that Muscenti and Clark purchased and provided alcohol to Basilicato and they were arrested on suspicion, according to Middletown Police Lt. Craig Weber.

"It's unfortunate that any of this ever happened," Weber said. "We hope that these two arrests show that we do care and that we're not going to tolerate this type of activity."

Muscenti and Clark were each officially charged with one count of providing alcoholic beverages to a person underage, a disorderly persons offense punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, six months in prison and the possible loss of driving privileges.

Clark was previously arrested on the same charge in August at Kunkel Park. Weber said he was not certain what the status was concerning the charge.
