Father to join daughter on Matawan council
BY KAREN E. BOWES

MATAWAN - Local government just became a family affair.

Democrat Joseph "Bud" Mullaney will soon join his daughter, Meghan, on the Borough Council.

The elder Mullaney earned 1,288 votes in last week's election. Running mate Michael Cannon, a Republican turned Democrat, garnered 1,323 votes to earn a seat. The pair beat out Republican incumbent Donna Gould (1,159) and running mate Tom Fitzsimmons (1,129).

"All three of my children are independent thinkers," Joseph Mullaney said on Monday. "They all have different careers. I would not expect to have a problem on the council because Meghan is an independent thinker, and I am an independent thinker."

Gould, who served six years on the council, accepted her defeat graciously.

"Well, the voters have made their choice and I respect that," Gould said. "They wanted to go in a different direction. I think we did everything we humanly, possibly could."

"It has been a fabulous six years. I've been privileged to serve the citizens of Matawan. I'm very proud to have served the people of Matawan."

The Democrats will now enjoy a 4-2 majority. Just two years ago, the full council and mayor's seat were all held by Republicans.

For goals, Mullaney listed the continued revitalization of the downtown area, the hiring of new police officers, the construction of a new court and stabilizing taxes.

"I deal with the people of Matawan every day," Mullaney said. "I know what their concerns are."

The councilman-elect said that new programs initiated by Mayor Mary Aufseeser have improved community involvement.

"Mayor Aufseeser is a very fine lady and sincere," Mullaney said.

In general, Mullaney said he hopes to install more hometown pride.

"If you want to make a difference, roll up your sleeves up and lets get to work," Mullaney said.

He added, "There is a lot of work that needs to be done, and Mike Cannon and I are ready to roll up our sleeves."
