Sex offenders indicted for parole violations BY DAN NEWMAN Staff Writer
FREEHOLD - Five county residents, including men from Aberdeen and Hazlet, were indicted last week on charges for failing to register as sex offenders and/or violating community supervision requirements for convicted sex offenders.
Wayne Hegel, 26, of Hazlet, and Thaddeus Yarbrough, 49, of Keansburg, were indicted for both of the aforementioned charges by a Monmouth County grand jury in Freehold on Nov. 15.
Hegel was convicted in 2000 for endangering the welfare of a minor and was thus required to register as a sex offender and serve a special sentence of community supervision for life. Hegel was held in lieu of $5,000 bail. Yarbrough was convicted on the same charge in 2002 and has an active warrant for his arrest.
Raymond Godwin Jr., 52, Aberdeen, was indicted for violating community supervision for life. In 1998, Godwin was convicted of sexual assault and criminal sexual contact, which, like Hegel, required him to serve a special sentence of community supervision for life. Godwin was released on $5,000 bail.
Earl Wade, 28, of Neptune and North Carolina, was indicted for failing to register as a sex offender. He was convicted in 2001 on a charge of taking indecent liberties with a child in North Carolina. Wade was taken into custody in lieu of $2,500 bail.
James Van Pelt, 39, of Neptune, was indicted for failing to register as a convicted sex offender. Van Pelt was convicted of a sexual abuse charge in 1996 in New York. He was arrested and released on his own recognizance.
None of the current charges involve additional sexual offenses or crimes against children.
"This office remains dedicated to protecting the community," Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis Valentin said in a press release. "Through the tireless effort of the Megan's Law Unit, these sex offenders were located living unregistered in the community, violating their supervision requirements or both. Convicted sex offenders have specific obligations under the law, and this office will continue to aggressively pursue those offenders who continue to violate the law."
