Dwayne M. Butler has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. A speechwriter to the Army Chief of Staff, he is assigned to Headquarters Department of the Army at the Pentagon, Arlington, Va. A 1986 graduate of Middletown High School North, Butler received his master's degree in 1993 from Central Michigan (Mount Pleasant) University. He received his doctorate degree in education in 2001 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He is married to Bobbi, and is the son of Mary J. and Young F. Butler of Bowman, S.C.

Army Pvt. Ryan J. Cunningham graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. The course is designed to train soldiers to establish, maintain and operate communication systems and assist in preparation of computer center operations, prepare field artillery tactical data systems for operation to include cabling, installation, and removal procedures, and input data and data base information to field artillery tactical data systems. Cunningham received an associate degree at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown. He is the son of Nancy Cunningham of the Belford section of Middletown, and Joel Cunningham of Keyport.

Army Reserve Pvt. Samuel D. Surowitz has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, he studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in various areas. He is the son of Steven Surowitz of Hazlet, and Jackie Jester of Hazlet.
