On Campus
The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, announced the following local student who received a degree at the summer commencement exercises:
Vincent Y. Cheung, of Holmdel, a bachelor of science degree in accounting.
The university announced the following local students named to the dean's list for the summer semester:
Marc A. Buonomo of Holmdel; and
Evan S. Harnik of the Lincroft section of Middletown.
The Brookdale Community College forensics team, Lincroft section of Middletown, placed second in the Pi Kappa Delta Sweepstakes at the West Chester (Pa.) University Bowl Forensic Championship, and earned eight awards at the Collegiate Forensics Association's annual fall tournament at Cedar Crest College, Allentown, Pa., during October. The team also finished seventh in the open sweepstakes.
Local students taking part in the competitions were sophomores Sheryl Taylor, Matawan, Mia Fedyna, Leonardo, and Tara Devine, Rumson. Taylor placed fourth in impromptu sales and fifth in after-dinner speaking, and Devine took second place in informative speaking with a speech on the human smile.
Sheryl Taylor, Matawan, a sophomore on the forensics team at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, was named tournament champion in program oral interpretation at the Jack Lynch Invitational Tournament at St. Anselm College, Manchester, N.H, in early November. Taylor also placed third in prose interpretation, fourth in after dinner speaking and ranked third best speaker overall. The annual competition attracted 16 colleges and universities from 13 states.
Rebecca Susan Meyer, Hazlet, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Pomona, where she is a sophomore majoring in math in the honors program. She is also the recipient of the college's Presidential Scholarship. A 2005 graduate of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology, Sandy Hook, she is the daughter of Susan and Arthur Meyer.
Students from Matawan Aberdeen Middle School attended the Willow Tree Teen Institute for Young Leaders, an annual middle and high school prevention and wellness training program at Camp Ralph Mason, Hardwick. The 15 students that attended were seventh-graders Sharyn Freindlich, Matthew Gilliard, Stephanie Irizarry, Erica Ostar, Emma Rodriguez, Justus Santana-Simmons and Sabrina Torres; and eighth graders Ashley Brenon, Alysa Buragina, Brandon Dowling, Jessica Rose Johnson, Ronette Jones, Anca Marinescu, Hanna Naparstek and Krista Rajmohan. The students attended workshops to learn how to be effective prevention advocates; effectively resolve conflicts; creatively teach others about the effects of alcohol, tobacco and drugs; the importance of being kind to one another; and how significant choices the students make really are.
