Brookdale event to honor valiant veterans

A day that will live in infamy." These are the penetrating words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as he appeared before the U.S. Congress to ask for a declaration of war against the Japanese Empire on Dec. 8, 1941. Since that time there have been many wars and many days of infamy, including the day of Sept. 11, 2001, and the current daily events in the Middle East and indeed all over the world.

I have been working on a committee that is planning a program to commemorate the events of Dec. 7, 1941 - the day of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The program will be held at the Collins Arena on the Brookdale Community College campus Dec. 1, 2006, at 7 p.m. This will mark the 65th anniversary of the day that propelled the United States into World War II.

The program will feature three guest speakers and others who were at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 as well as persons who served on active duty in either the Pacific or Atlantic theaters of operation during the war. In addition, there will be a band and choral renditions from the 1940s and 50s, and members of the U.S. Marine Corps 6th Motor Transport Battalion will make a guest appearance.

This event will provide us with an opportunity to honor those valiant men and women who served at Pearl Harbor and to pay tribute to their heroic deeds and sacrifices. Residents from Monmouth and surrounding counties are invited to attend this event and are encouraged to bring members of their family and friends to participate in the remembrance of this very special occasion.
