Middletown needs an adult community, not town center
Just when you thought an issue was resolved, two statements come up in one week that just make you shake your head.
The first is from Mr. Gary Fox (“Town center developer plans to appeal ruling,” Nov. 29) who says a decision by a Superior Court judge agreeing with the Township Committee to rezone the town center property is “ridiculous and absurd.” Remember, this is from an appeals court that agrees with all the lower court decisions. Does Mr. Fox care about the wishes of the taxpayers of Middletown? No, he is not even a resident but makes his money by representing the developer.
Then comes a letter from a resident who feels we should have more police in Middletown (“Middletown is worse off without town center,” Nov. 29). How he ties this to the town center makes me wonder. He feels condos and Pizza Huts create traffic but fails to address the town center and the “3,000 jobs” — plus the customers those employees will serve — as creating an even worse situation for Route 35 and the feeder roads. Middletown has been ranked as one of the “safest towns” in the United States year after year, and I for one am proud of the work being done by our police department. Does adding a mall mean we will be safer?
What has the Township Committee decided? After hearing the citizens’ opinions, analyzing the traffic studies, and applying good judgment, they said this development is too much. They rezoned it to an active adult community, which Middletown desperately needs. Other than our public-assisted housing, we can only look at Shady Oaks and Shadow Lake to go to when we are ready to downsize. Both of these developments are beautiful but the number of available units is limited. There is a shortage of housing available to our senior citizens and this development would go a long way to solve this problem.
I have lived in Middletown for 30 years and believe it is one of the greatest places to live in the United States. Obviously others agree, since every day you meet someone that has moved here to get away from the congestion that makes up life in North Jersey and New York. Let’s continue to fight the overdevelopment that would take away our beautiful way of life.
