Powder found in Vonage letter deemed nontoxic BY DAN NEWMAN Staff Writer
HOLMDEL — While police say progress has been made regarding a case involving a threatening letter sent to Vonage, the search is still on as to its source.
Township police were called around 1:40 p.m. on Dec. 13 by the company, headquartered at 23 Main St., after it received a letter with a suspicious powder inside of it, according to Detective Sgt. Lou Torres. Police, firefighters, Hazardous Materials Response Team (HAZMAT) members and Office of Emergency Management members were on the scene to check out the letter which was opened in the mailroom.
“The language in the letter was kind of strong and so there were some employees who thought that they may have been exposed to something hazardous,”` Torres said.
The powder was eventually determined to be nontoxic, Torres said, and it was sent to a lab for further analysis.
Torres said that nobody was injured and that the building was not evacuated. Mailroom employees were moved to another area for a brief amount of time.
“That area was contained until we could determine that it was OK to go back in there,” Torres said. “The incident lasted less than two hours and there was no disturbance of any daily activities at the company.”
People were counseled as to what to do if they felt any ill effects, although Torres anticipated that there would be none, being that the material was deemed to be nontoxic.
Torres said that the investigation remains ongoing and that the postal inspector would be involved because the letter was sent through the postal service. Torres declined to say from where the letter was sent.
“We’ve been making progress with this case right from the start and we will continue to work until we can find out what occurred,” Torres said.
