Middletown Historical Society to meet Jan. 15

The Middletown Township Historical Society and the Friends of the MacLeod-Rice House at Croydon Hall will hold a joint meeting Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at MacLeod-Rice House at Croydon Hall, 900 Leonardville Road, Leonardo section of Middletown.

The meeting is designed to discuss the restoration plans for the MacLeod-Rice House. Middletown Township Mayor designate Gerard Scharfenberger will present news on the house's future.

The public is welcome to attend and refreshments will be available.

Temple to host talk on stem cell research Jan. 11

Matawan Aberdeen Chapter of Hadassah and Temple Beth Ahm Sisterhood will host a discussion on the topic of stem cell research Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Ahm, 550 Lloyd Road, Aberdeen.

Featured speakers will be Martin H. Bluth, M.D., Ph.D., of State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, and George Greatrex, president of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund. The speakers will discuss the benefits versus problems relating to stem cell research from a scientific, religious and governmental standpoint. For more information, call (732) 583-2779.

Hazlet Rec announces winners, programs

Hazlet Recreation has announced the winners of its annual holiday house decorating contest, with first place awarded to 2 Amhurst Lane.

Second place went to 39 Briscoe Terrace, and third to 34 Skyline Drive. Two homes, 47 Lynn Blvd., Hazlet, and 73 Third St., West Keansburg section of Hazlet, tied for fourth place. Honorable mentions went to 12 Molly Pitcher, 6 Campo Lane, 5 Lisa Drive, 15 Gregory St., 30 Parkview Drive and 13 E. Richard St. The "Hall of Fame" houses included all of Kingsbridge Court, 3 Bauer Lane, 14 Sophia Drive and 1760 Union Ave.

Recreation will sponsor "Mommy/Dad and Me" for 2-year-olds beginning Jan. 31 for six Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. Cost is $40, with a $15 late fee for registration after Jan. 30. The program will feature play, crafts, games and songs and will be held at the recreation office in the Cullen Center, 1776 Union Ave. An open house and registration for children ages 3, 4 and 5 for the 2007-08 preschool will be held Feb. 22 from 9-11:30 a.m. at the recreation office. The program consists of three 10-week sessions, and snacks will be provided.

The program for 3-year-olds is held Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $162.50 for nonresidents and $130 for residents. The three-day program is Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at a cost of $250 for nonresidents and $200 for residents. Both programs are held from noon to 2 p.m. The program for 4-year-olds is Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9-11:30 a.m. at a fee of $300 for nonresidents and $240 for residents.

Half of the registration fee for the first session the child is registered for is viewed as a nonrefundable deposit. Required at registration are the child's birth certificate, two proofs of Hazlet residence, record of immunization, and proof of a physical dated within one year of the registration date. Registration under way for 'Sweetheart Dance'

Registration is now under way for the "Daddy Daughter Sweetheart Dance" sponsored by Holmdel Office of Parks and Recreation. The event will be Feb. 18 from 4-7 p.m. at the Holmdel Senior and Community Center, Crawfords Corner Road.

Cost is $80 per couple and $15 for each additional daughter. The event will feature dinner, dancing and a commemorative 5-by-7-inch professional photo. Registration is limited.

Register by Jan. 14 for first 'Ben Bowl'

St. Benedict Catholic Church and School, Holmdel, will host its first annual bowling championship, "The Ben Bowl," Jan. 28 from 2-4 p.m. at Brunswick Zone Bowling Lanes, Route 36, Hazlet. Registration deadline is Jan. 14.

"Sopranos" star Dan (Patsy Parisi) Grimaldi will be in attendance at the fundraiser, and registered attendees may have pictures taken with the actor. The event will include two hours of unlimited bowling, skill contests and the opportunity to win the "St. Benedict Cup" for the single highest game score. Awards will also be given for best male and female bowler awards in age groups 5-8, 9-13, 14-18, 19-64 and 65 and older. Registration is $18 per bowler or six bowlers may buy a lane for $90.

'Mom to Mom,' open house at St. Joseph's

St. Joseph School, 376 Maple Place, Keyport, will host "Mom to Mom" Jan. 19 at 9 a.m.

Preschool, kindergarten and other prospective parents are invited to attend and meet St. Joseph School moms, and learn about the school. Information will be given about the school's curriculum.

A Catholic Schools Week open house will be Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to noon. New families are welcome to join faculty, students and families at the event and learn about curriculum, programs and academic achievements. Tours will be given at both events.

Meetings, talk by artist at Middletown Library

The Middletown Township Public Library board of trustees will hold its reorganization meeting Jan. 10 and its regular meeting Jan. 17, with both meetings at 7 p.m.

Atlantic Highlands artist Donald Voorhees will speak, and sign copies of his new book, "Lessons From a Lifetime of Watercolor Painting," Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. Voorhees was the owner of Donald Voorhees Gallery, Middletown, for 25 years. Listed in "Who's Who in American Art," he has painted scenes worldwide from Australia to South America, as well as the United States and the Jersey Shore. His book is divided into two sections: "Materials, Supplies, and the Basics," and "How to Paint What You Want," and includes demonstrations of Voorhees' watercolor painting techniques. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

Registration under way for amateur radio class

The Middletown Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) will conduct a one-day class and test session Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Croydon Hall Senior Center, Leonardville Road, Leonardo section of Middletown. The testing fee is $14, and interested individuals should study for at least four weeks from the American Radio Relay League book "Now You're Talking! Level One Technician," 5th edition. Martin Luther King celebration Jan. 14

The Allen Project, the Monmouth Center for World Religions and Ethical Thought & Social Action Ministry of the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Congregation of Monmouth County will present a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. at the UU meetinghouse at 1475 W. Front St., Lincroft section of Middletown.

The event will include a performance of "The Meeting" by Dunbar Repertory Company. The performance examines what would have happened if Malcolm X and Dr. King had met before the men were assassinated. Refreshments will be served.
