Robert Hatfield
Mr. Hatfield, 44, of Middletown, died Dec. 31, 2006, at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided in the Leonardo section most of his life, prior to moving to Middletown. He was a third railman for the Port Authority Trans-Hudson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was current president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 864, Philadelphia. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Charlotte Cook Hatfield; his parents, John and Doris Hatfield of Norton, Ohio; a daughter, Erin Waltmer of Middletown; a son, Christopher Waltmer of Middletown; a sister, Doris Gasereit of Barnegat; and three brothers, John Hatfield and Gary Hatfield, both of Old Bridge, and William Hatfield of Ohio. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, North Middletown. Burial was at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Frederick J. Doran
Mr. Doran, 76, of Hazlet, and Seminole, Fla., died Dec. 31, 2006, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Bergenfield before moving to Hazlet 50 years ago. Mr. Doran was superintendent of mail and delivery for the U.S. Postal Service at the Hazlet post office, retiring in 1989. He was one of the first four mailmen in Hazlet when its postal service began. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a past member of Hazlet First Aid Squad. Mr. Doran is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet West Doran; three daughters, Cathy Frontera, Vickie Doran and Debbie Goldstein; a brother, Arthur Doran; and three grandchildren. Stanley Foster
Mr. Foster, 100, of Holmdel, died Dec. 30, 2006, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Freehold, he resided there prior to moving to The Willows, Holmdel, recently. He was a retired regional salesman at Grebow's, Lakewood. Prior to that, he was a manager at Colonial Wallpaper and Paint, and as a broadloom weaver at A & M Karagheusian, both Freehold. He enjoyed playing the piano, woodworking, golf, singing and sports. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth; four brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lucille; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Irvin Duncan of Dumfries, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley "Ron" and Betty Foster of Gainesville, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Gail O'Herron of Middletown; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Margaret N. Nelson Woodward
Mrs. Woodward, 94, of Keansburg, died Dec. 29, 2006, at Bayside Manor, Keansburg. Born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, she resided in Plains, Pa.; Staten Island, N.Y.; and Florida prior to relocating to Keansburg. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Harold in 1977; and eight siblings. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and George Kaiser of Middletown, and Mary and Ron Schuelke of Appleton, Wis.; a son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Marguerite Woodward of Staten Island, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mildred A. Makinson Sheppard
Mrs. Sheppard, 94, of Middletown, died Dec. 29, 2006, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, she resided in the West Keansburg section of Hazlet for 55 years before relocating to Middletown one year ago. Mrs. Sheppard was predeceased by her husband, Thomas A. Sheppard, in 1967; a son, Thomas Sheppard, in 2005; and a daughter, Barbara Sheppard, in 1957. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Bob Davis of West Keansburg, and Jean and Mike Wagner of the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Gretchen Sheppard of Middletown; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. John L. "Pops" Balka
Mr. Balka, 84, of Freehold Township, died Dec. 29, 2006, at his daughter's home in Freehold Township. Born in Carteret, he had resided there and in Woodbridge before moving to Freehold Township 10 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1985, he was a lead man for GATX Terminals Corp., Carteret, where he was employed for 46 years. Mr. Balka was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Freehold. He was also an avid supporter of the lacrosse and soccer teams of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft section of Middletown. He was predeceased in 1997 by his wife, Ann Orosz Balka. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Dr. John Sensakovic of Lincroft, and Bette Jane and Henry Lubas of Freehold Township; a brother, Louis Balka of Forked River; a sister, Helen Bauer of Mays Landing; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold, followed by interment at Cloverleaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Yvonne McKay
Mrs. McKay, 43, of Middletown, died Dec. 28, 2006, at home. She was born in Kearny. She was a floral designer at Michael's Crafts, Holmdel. She was a parishioner, Eucharistic minister, CCD teacher and volunteer at St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, North Middletown. She was predeceased by a son, Nick McKay in 1999. She is survived by her fiancé, John Aviles of Middletown; her mother, Mildred Cerligione of Hazlet; a daughter, Meghan McKay of Middletown; a stepson, Daniel Polanco of Middletown; two nieces; and several aunts and uncles. Helen Marie Sullivan McDonald
Mrs. McDonald, 71, of Keansburg, died Dec. 28, 2006, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was born in New York City. She was a food service worker at Riverview Hospital, Red Bank, for 13 years, retiring in 1993. She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Neil Sullivan; and two sisters, Judy and Catherine Sullivan. She is survived by her husband, James McDonald; a son, Thomas McDonald of New York City; two daughters, Maeve McDonald of Keansburg, and Ellen Gilliard of Aberdeen; a sister, Nora O'Donald of the Bronx, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. Madeline A. Lally Hufford
Mrs. Hufford, 81, of Matawan, died Dec. 28, 2006, at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Born in New York City, she had resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Matawan 20 years ago Mrs. Hufford had been a saleswoman at Macy's, Brooklyn, for 20 years. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y. Maria "Lena" LoSapio DiPoalo
Mrs. DiPoalo, 86, of Hazlet, died Dec. 28 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Keyport, she resided in Hazlet most of her life. She was a food service worker at Holmdel Township Board of Education for 20 years, retiring in 1988. Prior to that, she was employed at Keyport Cork Factory. She was a member of the auxiliary committee at Bayshore Community Hospital. She enjoyed bowling, and playing cards. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel DiPoalo in 1988; and a son, George DiPoalo. She is survived by a son, Carmine Coppola of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet; a daughter, Vincenzia "Vinnie" DiPoalo of Hazlet; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Angelo and Dolly LoSapio of Brick, Sal and Virginia LoSapio of Pennsylvania, and Pasquale LoSapio of Margliano, Italy; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and John Distasio of Lady Lake, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Ann T. Petruzzi Ward
Mrs. Ward, 85, of Tamarac, Fla., died Dec. 26, 2006, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, she resided in Bloomfield prior to relocating to Tamarac 24 years ago. She was a retired beautician and the owner and operator of Miss Ann Beauty Shop, Bloomfield. She was also an actress that appeared in several TV movies and commercials, and a member of the Screen Actors Guild. She was predeceased by two brothers; and a sister. She is survived by her husband, James Ward; two daughters, Leeann Bachstadt of Hazlet, and Cheryl McCabe of Holmdel; a son, Leonard Pietrzak Jr. of Dingmans Ferry, Pa.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Laraine A. Hukill
Mrs. Hukill, 61, of Middletown, died Dec. 27, 2006. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a Realtor at Weichert, Middletown. Prior to that, she was a secretary for Middletown School District, and Soldo Construction, and a homemaker. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Jim Barclay of Middletown, Laura and Billy Hendricks of Florida, and Teresa and Andrew Kret of Middletown; a brother, Nicholas Papalcure of Michigan; and eight grandchildren. Michael G. Bruntz
Mr. Bruntz, 54, of Atlantic Highlands, died Dec. 26, 2006, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. Born in Red Bank, he resided in Atlantic Highlands and Middletown prior to relocating to Atlantic Highlands. He was a funeral director at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, for more than 20 years. He was a former member of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Vince Lombardi Council, Middletown, and past president of the Middletown Jaycees. He was also a former coach and president of Middletown Youth Athletic Association Pacific League. He enjoyed bowling, golf and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Cynthia Hofman Bruntz; three daughters, Laura Bruntz of Lenexa, Va., and Tammy Roy and Mellisa Pascoe, both of Atlantic Highlands; a son, Michael G. Bruntz Jr. of Hoboken; a brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Lyn Bruntz of John's Island, S.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Denise and Thomas McDermott of Chester, Md., and Susan and Peter Tommaso of Middletown; and three granddaughters. Dorothy Nebus Locha
Mrs. Locha, 73, of Sayreville, died Dec. 26, 2006, at home. Prior to her retirement in 1996, she was employed as an administrative assistant at Roosevelt Hospital, Edison, where she worked for 27 years. Before that, she worked at Raritan Arsenal, Edison, for six years. Her husband, Francis Locha, died Dec. 1. Surviving are two sons, Francis W. Locha of Sayreville and Thomas C. Locha of the Parlin section of Sayreville; two daughters, Martha Locha-Savoy of Keyport and Mary Locha of North Brunswick; and two grandsons. A Mass was offered at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sayreville. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Carolyn Berth Freyer
Mrs. Freyer, 65, of Hazlet, died Dec. 25, 2006, at home. Born in Red Bank, she resided in Middletown prior to relocating to Hazlet three years ago. She was an assembler at Cooper Electric, Long Branch, the past 10 years. Prior to that, she was employed at Brockway Glass, Freehold, and Lily Tulip, Holmdel. She was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church, Middletown. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and David Solari of Bayonne; a son, Kenneth Freyer of Middletown; two sisters, Jo Ann Berth and Linda Oze, both of Highlands; a brother, John Berth of Tampa, Fla.; and three grandchildren. Robert Emer
Robert R. Emer, 73, of Middletown, died Dec. 23, 2006, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had been a resident of Middletown for 12 years. Mr. Emer was a gardener for Pratt Institute for many years. He was predeceased in 2004 by his wife, Catherine Emer. Surviving are three daughters, Angela Emer, Kathleen Vota and Robin Emer, all of Middletown; three sisters, Catherine Lynch of Middletown, Alice Clark of Manchester, and Dolly Euler of Freehold; a brother, Joseph Emer of Brooklyn; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home followed by burial at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
John Hendrickson Sr.
John Hendrickson Sr., 88, of Middletown, died Dec. 21, 2006, at St. Barnabas Hospice, Long Branch. He was born on Cherry Tree Farm, Middletown. He graduated from Leonardo High School in 1935 and was a 1939 graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, where he received his bachelor of arts degree. He served with the rank of lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Hendrickson was a traffic manager for New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. for more than 31 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Red Bank-Tower Hill; the Monmouth Boat Club; Schussboomers Ski Club; Telephone Pioneers of American; Rutgers Alumni Association; and the Lakers Golf League of Shadow Lake. He was predeceased by his first wife of 38 years, Nancy Malchow, in 1980, and a brother, Robert. Surviving are his wife of 16 years, Marie E. "Bette" Weigand; a son, John T. Hendrickson Jr. of Freehold Township; a daughter, Nancy Lou Hendrickson of Neffs, Pa.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank, followed by interment at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Edward Libutti
Mr. Libutti, 73, of Aberdeen, died Dec. 20, 2006, at Care One Nursing Home. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he resided there prior to relocating to Aberdeen 42 years ago. He was vice president of Insco Systems, Neptune. He enjoyed computers, and animals. He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Libutti. He is survived by his wife. Janet Libutti; a daughter, Spring Libutti of Aberdeen; and a sister, Theresa Calimeri of Toms River. Interment was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Keyport. James Harold Jennings
Mr. Jennings, 63, of Kingsport, Tenn., and formerly Keyport, died Dec. 17, 2006, at Sunbridge Hillside Healthcare Center following a lengthy illness. He was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He was employed at Pennetti Roofing and Mallett Roofing, both Keyport, until 1975. He served with the U.S. Air Force with the Air Police, Highlands, during the Vietnam Era. He is survived by his ex-wife, Aileen Jennings Sickler; his wife, Pauline Taylor-Jennings-Jennings; three daughters, Phyliss Jennings-Curto of Keyport, Melissa Jennings-Holder of Newport, R.I., and Jamie Jennings of Kingsport, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Angela Jennings-Ratliff of Kingsport; a stepson, John Jennings of Hickory, N.C.; two sisters, Phyliss Wilcox and Betty Sturgill, both of Kingsport; three brothers, John and Bill Jennings, both of Kingsport, and Tom Jennings of Rogersville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren. Tawnya L. Lockwood
Mrs. Lockwood, 80, of Keyport, died Jan. 5, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was born in Lakeland, Fla. She was a teacher for the Keyport School District for several years. She as a member of Reformed Church of Keyport. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman B. Lockwood in 1988. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Edith and Joseph Ring, and Nancy and George Dzierewianko; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard N. and Carol Lockwood; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Interment was at Holmdel Cemetery. Arrangements were by Bedle Funeral Home, Keyport.
Mary J. Trachimowicz Grande
Mrs. Grande, 87, of Matawan, died Jan. 5, 2007, at Laurel Bay Health and Rehabilitation Center, Keansburg. Born in Perth Amboy, she resided in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, prior to moving to Matawan 35 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Trachimowicz in 1992; and her twin sisters, Julia Anderson in 1992, and Anna Trachimowicz in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Vito J. Grande; a son, Michael J. Grande of Hazlet; a daughter, Frances Kaeser of Tinton Falls; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Entombment was at St. Joseph's Mausoleum, Keyport. Antoinette Roebling Bunce Schildge
Mrs. Schildge, 96, of Middletown, died Jan. 1, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she resided there prior to moving to Middletown in 1942. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Middletown. She was a member of Navesink Garden Club, Navesink section of Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Adam T. Schildge in 1993. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Antonia S. Malone and John Rafter of Middletown, and Elvira and George Maniatty of Allentown, Pa.; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Adam T. Schildge Jr. of San Francisco, George H. and Janie Schildge of Colts Neck, Richard Louis and the late Cathy Schildge of the Wayside section of Ocean Township, and Ronald F. and Lyn Schildge of Glen Gardener; 21 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
