Armed men pose as cops, rob home
BY KAREN E. BOWES
Staff Writer

KEYPORT - Three armed men posing as police officers invaded a Second Street home last week, duct-taped the hands of two victims, then stole cash and other items, according to police.

The incident took place on the evening of Jan. 7 around 11:30 p.m., according to Detective Capt. Thomas Mitchell.

"Three black males entered a residence on Second Street," Mitchell said. "They posed as police officers initially. There were three residents home in the house, two males and one female. The female who answered the door was duct-taped, her hands. She was held downstairs by one of the guys and the other two went upstairs and confronted one of the males upstairs. He was duct-taped."

The third resident was in a separate part of the home and was unaware of what was happening until the robbers were gone.

Mitchell said he could not disclose how much cash was taken. Along with the money, other items were taken, but Mitchell declined to elaborate.

"Two of the men had guns, semi-automatic handguns. All the victims are in their late 20s, early 30s. The two male victims are related," Mitchell said.

Police have released a composite sketch of the one suspect who was not wearing a mask. He was described as a black male with a dark complexion, approximately 5'10", with a medium build and weighing between 165-170 lbs.

"We have some leads that have taken us to the Lakewood area. We have a composite of one of the guys, Two were wearing masks," he said.

According to police, the invasion was not done indiscriminately.

"It was a planned target," Mitchell said. "It wasn't random."

Anyone who may have information pertining to the case can contact the Keyport Police Department at (732) 264-0706.
