Chief reminds residents to remove snow

MIDDLETOWN - Chief of Police Robert Oches wishes to remind residents that Middletown Township ordinance No. 234-55 requires homeowners, occupants or tenants of any premise - residential or business - to remove all snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours after a snowfall.

If the snow has become so frozen that removal is impracticable, it must be thoroughly covered with sand, salt or cinders within the same 24-hour period.

Snow on sidewalks in front of homes forces a large number of the township's youngsters to walk in sometimes busy township and county roadways during early morning and late afternoon during times of low light and heavy use by vehicles.

The ordinance also prohibits the throwing, placing or depositing of snow or ice on any township street or sidewalk. Homeowners who have planned vacations or are physically unable to maintain sidewalks during the winter months should make alternate arrangements before the snow season arrives.

Officers will target businesses and residents throughout the winter that fail to comply and keep sidewalks clean, as well as individuals depositing snow back onto township roads and creating further hazards.
