BCC announces events, Black History Month schedule

Brookdale Community College, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft section of Middletown, will present "Grief as a Positive Change Agent" Jan. 31.

Brookdale's Black History Month events will continue with a dedication ceremony for the African American stamp art exhibition Feb. 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center. The exhibition continues through Feb. 18 at the Monmouth Museum and Cultural Center, Nilson Gallery. The event will feature music selections and an exhibition of original black heritage stamp art. Guest speakers are state Sen. Joseph M. Kyrillos Jr. and Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian G. Burry. For information, call (732) 747-2266. Museum admission is $6 for visitors age 2 and older, and free for museum members.

"Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome" will be presented by Dr. Joy Leary Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the student life center. Admission is $5, $3 for Brookdale staff and faculty, and free for students with valid ID.

The movie "4 Little Girls" will be shown Feb. 6 and 8 at noon at the student life center. The free movie documents the bombing of an African-American church during the Civil Rights movement. "The Tuskeegee Airmen" will be presented Feb. 15 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Paris Qualles, HBO history screenwriter, will relate stories he heard growing up that he used to develop his acclaimed feature on the famed World War II all-black American fighter squadron. The Department of Outreach, Business and Community Development will offer a class to obtain a 36-hour certificate in project management Mondays 6-9 p.m., Feb. 5-April 23. The fee is $822, and the course code is XBUSM 214 PR.

The 27-hour certificate in community association management will be offered Tuesdays 6-9 p.m., Feb. 13-April 17. The fee is $637, and course code is XBUSS 023PR.

The 30-hour certificate in meeting and event planning and management will be offered Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 24-April 21. Mental health screenings will be held Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the student health center. Appointments are required. Blood pressure screenings will be offered weekdays through Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon at the student health center. Weight reduction group hypnosis will be held Feb. 1 at the student life center. "Test Anxiety" will be presented Feb. 15. Smoke cessation group hypnosis will be held Feb. 22. Registration is required for all of the above, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Warner Student Life Center unless otherwise noted. The PAC will present the play "A Lesson Before Dying" Feb. 15 and 22 at 10 a.m. (school matinees); Feb. 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 8 p.m.; and Feb. 18 and 25 at 4 p.m. The play is based on the book of the same name by Ernest J. Gaines and tells the story of Jefferson, an innocent young man condemned to death in the 1948 Louisiana backwoods. It was produced as an HBO special with Don Cheadle and Cicely Tyson. Tickets are $18; $15 for seniors age 62 and older, non-Brookdale students, and children; and $5 for Brookdale students with valid ID. For tickets, call the box office at (732) 224-2411.

Two career and information nights will be held to explain Brookdale's Communiversity Feb. 26 and 28, 5:30-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m., at the student life center. The Feb. 26 sessions will highlight bachelor degree programs and career information for accounting, computer science, liberal studies and employment relations, management and marketing. The Feb. 28 sessions will highlight degree programs and career information for criminal justice, education, fire science, nursing, professional security studies and psychology.

program slated for Feb. 1

The Women's Ministry at Lincroft Bible Church, 790 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft section of Middletown, will hold its Coffee program Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m. Guest speaker will be Karen Pulley, wife of the Rev. Lloyd Pulley of Calvary Chapel, Old Bridge. She will discuss how to avoid the empty feeling individuals may have when trying to fill a spiritual void with earthly means. Rebecca's Reel Quilters Guild to meet Feb. 4

Rebecca's Reel Quilters Guild will hold its next meeting Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at Poricy Park Nature Center, Oak Hill Road, Middletown. Anna Faustina, artist, teacher, knitter and traditional quilter will present a trunk show at the meeting. Fee is $5 for nonmembers and $4 for members.

Lincoln Hose Company announces officers

Lincoln Hose Company No. 1, Keyport, has announced its officers for 2007, with Frank Grabowski named as president.

Charles McCue will serve as vice president, and Robert M. Poling as secretary. Serving as assistant secretary is Robert M. Poling Jr., while Lou Troisi will assume the role of treasurer. Gene Regan, Charles McCue and James Poling will serve as trustees. Monmouth County Firemen's Association members are Scott Hicks, Robert Aumack and Scott Hicks.

Special events officers are Joseph Moscatiello and Gary Pedersen. Backroom members are Jim Poling, Charles McCue, Tom Poling, Scott Hicks, Randy Hicks, John Pangborn, Frank Grabowski, Dominick Panzera, Daniel Regan and Thomas Grabowski.

Serving as captain will be Thomas Grabowski, while Lou Troisi will serve as first lieutenant. Second lieutenant is Robert Aumack, and Chief Engineer Gene Regan. Scott Hicks will serve as first assistant, and John Kovacs as second assistant.

St. Mary's Travel Group, 26 Leonardville Road, New Monmouth section of Middletown, will host a slide presentation about the group's upcoming trip to Prague, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Those who plan to attend are asked to R.S.V.P. by Feb. 10.

Reservations for the 10-day Sept. 25 trip will be accepted at the slide show. The trip cost is $2,899 for round-trip transportation to Newark Airport, airfare, accommodations, meals, a professional tour guide, taxes and tips.

Pallone's satellite office to open Feb. 6

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) will open his Matawan satellite office at 201 Broad St., Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents are welcome to visit the office to voice concerns and opinions on issues facing the nation and to receive assistance with any problems or concerns experienced with federal programs. A district representative from Pallone's office will be available that date and the first Tuesday of each month.

The congressman's office will also offer satellite office hours locally the second Tuesday in the Leonardo section of Middletown, and the third Tuesday in Hazlet. For locations or more information, call (888) 423-1140.

Holmdel Half Century Club class Feb. 1

The Holmdel Half Century Club will hold its next computer class Feb. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and each Thursday at Indian Hill School, 735 Holmdel Road.

Club members are welcome to attend the film, "That Night in Rio" with Carmen Miranda Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at Hazlet Multiplex Cinema, Route 35. Cost is $1 for the movie, popcorn and soda. The next meeting will be Feb. 6 at noon at the Holmdel Senior Center, Crawfords Corner Road.

Tickets for Bobby Byrne event on sale Feb. 3

The Knights of Columbus Council 11349, St. Benedict's Parish, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel, will welcome Irish singer Bobby Byrne Feb. 10 at 8:30 p.m. Advance ticket sales begin Feb. 3.

Byrne will perform music from Broadway shows, ballads and medleys. The event will also feature beer, wine, soda, cake and coffee. Tickets are $30.
