Aberdeen woman charged with assault on police officer
ABERDEEN - A township woman has been charged with assaulting a police officer during the investigation of a domestic disturbance last week.
Police were called to an Atlantic Avenue home around 4 p.m. on Jan. 24 to respond to a domestic violence report. Kimberly Kovacs, 26, left the home before police arrived to question her, but a responding officer, recognizing her from a past incident, spotted her at the Singin Oil gas station on Lower Main Street while en route, according to Lt. Joseph Cole.
When police questioned her, Kovacs reportedly became verbally abusive and cursed at the officers, and shoved Sgt. David Mauro. Kovacs resisted officers' efforts to handcuff her, but was eventually subdued and taken into custody, according to police.
Handcuffed in the back seat of the patrol car, Kovacs kicked out a rear window, spraying broken glass into the face of Detective Christopher DeSarno. According to Cole, DeSarno was able to close his eyes in time and avoid any injury.
Kovacs was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of criminal mischief and resisting arrest. She was taken to Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in lieu of $135,000 bail with no 10 percent option.
