An estimated crowd of 700 residents packed the auditorium of Middletown High School North in December 1986 for a joint hearing of the Township Committee and Planning Board to discuss the township's affordable housing obligations. At the time, Middletown had an obligation of 1,850 units, the most in the county. The crowd blasted the the state-mandated affordable housing guidelines, as well as the town's plan to meet its obligation.
