Four-way stop coming to Middletown intersection

DAN NEWMAN The intersection of Port Monmouth Road and Bray Avenue. An ordinance was recently introduced to have a traffic light placed here.
MIDDLETOWN - Described as a place that has had "many near-accidents and some actual accidents," the intersection of Port Monmouth Road and Bray Avenue is one step closer to being a lot safer.

At last week's Township Committee meeting, an ordinance was introduced that would eventually lead to the intersection being a four-way stop. Currently, there are stop signs at either end of Bray Avenue.

"That intersection has been a perennial problem and we need to do something about it already," Mayor Gerard Scharfenberger said. "That area near the [Bayshore] Rec Center has plenty of traffic going by there. Sometimes it takes a while to get something like this off the ground, but at least now the process has started."

Scharfenberger said he is aware of no opposition to installing the four-way stop at the inersection.

"Sometimes when the Township Committee brings something up, you may hear some rumblings or whispers that people are not in favor of it," Scharfenberger said. "But for an item that is only going to make things better for all involved, I can't imagine anyone taking issue with it."

Middletown Police Lt. Craig Weber said that about five accidents occur at the site per year, and sometimes it does affect the rec center.

"The goal is to be able to slow people down over there and have everybody be safe," Weber said. "I'm a huge supporter of this ordinance and I hope that things can get done quickly and we can lessen the traffic problems over there."
