New clerk lists records organization as priority
BY LORI ANNE OLIWA
Correspondent

KEYPORT - Valerie Tornick Heilweil was officially sworn in as the new borough clerk Feb. 20.

Heilwell replaces Allyson Cinquegrana, who took over the position a little less than a year ago for longtime clerk Judy Poling.

"I am very happy to be here," Heilweil said in an interview Friday.

Heilweil comes to Keyport with many years of experience working in municipal government. She was the deputy municipal clerk in Fair Haven for two-and-a-half years, and prior to that served as the administrative assistant to the Haledon borough clerk. She received training and subsequent certification as a municipal clerk at Rutgers University.

"I feel I've had good experience in other places that I can bring here," Heilweil said.

Commenting on some of that experience, Heilweil said, "I like to tell my story this way - I am where I am now because my husband died, and I needed to go back to work full time to support a family."

When asked about her opinion of the borough, Heilweil said, "What I am finding is that Keyport is very similar to Haledon in terms of the people, the town itself, the type of development in the area, and the population."

Heilweil added that she thought the council resolution designating Keyport as an area in need of rehabilitation, which was passed during her first meeting, "is a great idea."

When asked about priorities in the position, Heilweil responded, "I want to make sure that everything is documented properly, like meeting minutes, resolutions and ordinances. Though the duties of my position are statutory, I believe that is most important."

"There is always room for improvement," Heilweil said of her duties. "Taking and transposing meeting minutes is very challenging because other job duties do not end. It is a very time-consuming process."
