Middletown man arrested for thefts from customers
FREEHOLD - A Leonardo man was arrested at his home on Monday and charged with second-degree theft for allegedly stealing money from customers of his furniture businesses.
William C. Neumann Jr., 61, is the owner of Cabbage Rose, LLC, a Fair Haven-based furniture store, and Chelsea Manor Unlimited, which sells furniture on the Internet. Numerous complaints were received by local law enforcement officials that Neumann received furniture orders and obtained deposits for merchandise from customers in the amount of $290,000 between January 2004 and January 2007, but failed to deliver the merchandise to the customers or submit refunds.
Between both businesses, Neumann defrauded 83 victims throughout the nation, according to a Monmouth County Proscutor's Office press release.
"Mr. Neumann's criminal conduct resulted in a substantial theft which victimized many innocent consumers," Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin said. "This office will continue to vigorously pursue corporate officials who engage in deceitful business practices which harm the public."
Neumann was also charged with second-degree misconduct by a corporate official. His bail was set at $150,000 with no 10 percent option.
