Keyport to hold second St. Pat's parade Sunday

KEYPORT - The borough will host its second annual St. Patrick's Day parade and celebration on Sunday.

The parade will begin at Broad Street at the intersection of Monroe Street, then march down Broad Street to the intersection of West Front Street, where it will continue west onto West Front Street to Firemen's Parking Lot, next to the Ye Cottage Inn. In announcing the event, Kenneth Lawlor, spokesperson for the Parade Committee, said in a press release that Keyport is anticipating an even bigger parade than last year, "and we want to spread the word and encourage everyone in the community to join together, come out and march and support it."

The 2007 parade's grand marshal is Cheryl Hill, a lifelong Keyport resident, a teacher in the borough for almost 40 years and an active Kiwanis member for the past 15 years. Hill's award-winning second-grade class project, "Potholders-R-Us," has raised over $80,000 for the Sunshine House in Point Pleasant, a retreat for children with cancer. Through Hill's support of Sunshine House, the food pantry carries her name.

Hill is a former Keyport Teacher of the Year. She also dedicates her time outside Keyport to volunteer with Bridges, a group that distributes clothes to the homeless in New York City. Past and present Keyport students are expected to come out to support Hill at this year's parade, according to the press release.

Entertainment throughout the day at will include marching pipe bands, step dancing, and live bands at McDonagh's Pub and the Bulkhead Bar & Grill. Another addition to this year's parade is the Frazier Commodore Marching Band, a 100-piece band from the Pittsburgh area. Following the parade, the festivities will continue at McDonagh's Pub with live music under the big tent, and awards to be given out for the best Irish-themed fire truck and best Irish-themed group participating in the parade.
