Utility pole split, power lost from DWI accident
HOLMDEL - A Belford woman was arrested on several drug and motor vehicle violation charges following an accident that caused a power outage on Thursday afternoon.
At 12:47 p.m., police received a report of a serious accident on West Main Street in the area of the Vonage offices. Police determined that a 2006 Nissan Armada sport utility vehicle driven by Nicole Devaney, 34, struck a utility pole, severing it in half and leaving the top half hanging from electrical wires.
The accident caused the traffic light at the intersection of routes 34 and 520 to lose power. Holmdel police directed traffic in the area for two hours until power was restored, and remained on the scene into the night until crews replaced the pole.
According to police, Devaney, whose driving privileges were suspended, initially gave the responding officer a fictitious name. She is also alleged to have been found in possession of unauthorized prescription drugs, stolen prescriptions, forged prescriptions and an open beer in the vehicle.
Devaney was charged with theft of prescription blanks, two counts of obtaining prescriptions by fraud, providing false information to police, two counts of illegal possession of prescription drugs and one count of forgery, all of which are indictable offenses. Additionally, Devaney was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of controlled dangerous substances in a motor vehicle, possession of an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and an outstanding warrant out of Tinton Falls in the amount of $400.
While being interviewed at the scene by police, Devaney was reportedly bleeding from the mouth and was observed to have some bruising on her neck area. Although she declined medical treatment, she was soon transported by Holmdel First Aid to Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel, for treatment.
Following her release from the hospital Thursday, Devaney was taken to Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office.
A follow-up investigation is being conducted by the Holmdel Police Department Detective Bureau.
