Students sought for birding challenge

National Biodiversity Parks' (NBP) Fledgling Birders has announced its schoolyard birding challenge, a "contest" to promote awareness of local wildlife for the youth of New Jersey.

Under a teacher's supervision, student teams from participating schools will look for birds on and around schoolyards during April and May. Searches may be conducted as frequently as possible before, after, or during school hours at the teacher's discretion. At the end of each month, teams submit the total number of birds along with a checklist of all species seen via the Fledgling Birders Web site.

Upon confirmation of the list, NBP will provide the following for the school with the highest final total of species:

+ A new field guide for the class or birding club

+ A certificate of achievement documenting the monthly effort

+ A feature article about the team and school on the Fledgling Birders Web site.
