4 unopposed for Holmdel school board
BY DAN NEWMAN
Staff Writer

HOLMDEL - Three candidates are running for three, three-year terms and one candidate is seeking a one-year term on the Holmdel Board of Education on April 17.

Mary Hartnett, 41, Crimson King Drive, is running for a second term on the board. As chairperson of the Special Education Committee, Hartnett is looking forward to continuing her work.

"I still want to see us make changes in programs," Hartnett said. "We really have an opportunity to enhance things in this district and I hope we can take advantage of that."

Ana Vander Woude, Line Road, is running for the first time and cites wanting to contribute to the community and her township's educational system as the two biggest reasons for her candidacy.

"I understand there will be a learning curve at the start, but hopefully I'll be able to acclimate quickly to how things are done," said Vander Woude, a stay-at-home mother of two young children.

Gerald Burke, Forest Park Court, currently serves on the board and is a member of several board committees, including the special education, policy and personnel committees. Attempts to reach Burke for this story were unsuccessful.

Phyllis Pascucci, Yellow Brook Road, is the lone candidate for the one-year term and served previously on the board, once when she was elected to a three-year term and also when she was appointed to a one-year term. She said she has been off the board for about three years but is now eager to get back into the swing of things.

"We've had so many people coming and going in the past, but since we've hired [Schools Superintendent] Barbara Duncan, things have gone in a positive direction, and so I'm looking forward to working with her and the other members of the board," Pascucci said.

Pascucci, who is employed at the New School of Monmouth County, Holmdel, said she was interested in helping out with the Special Education Committee, as well as having more dialogue among board members.
