Parked car rolls backward, trapping its owner beneath

HOLMDEL - A township man is said to be recovering well from injuries suffered from being hit and pinned beneath his car on Easter.

Police arrived at the Takolusa Drive home of Giovanni Russo, 45, after receiving a report that he was trapped below his 2001 Mercedes Benz.

A preliminary investigation concluded that Russo parked his vehicle on the sloped driveway at his residence. When he went to remove an item from the trunk, the car rolled backward down the driveway with Russo underneath. Witnesses at the scene immediately called 911.

According to police, Russo was having difficulty breathing and sustained severe cuts and abrasions over his body. He was treated at the scene by the Holmdel First Aid Squad and MONOC, then transported to a helipad at the Lucent complex, Crawfords Corner Road, for a flight to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Russo was listed in good condition Monday pending surgery to repair a broken leg.

The vehicle was impounded and will be inspected for any possible defects, according to police. The Holmdel Traffic Safety Bureau's investigation of the matter is ongoing.
