On a night honoring the memory of one of the local soccer community's greatest contributors, soccer players of all ages took the fields of Raritan High School in Hazlet on Saturday. The first annual Doug Hamilton Memorial Soccer Classic, held by the Hazlet United Soccer Association, drew fans for a variety of games and clinics held throughout the day. The highlight of the event was a game played between the Rutgers University and St. John's University mens teams, while as many as 16 local youth teams also had their chance to shine in a series of quick match-ups. Hamilton, 43, who passed away suddenly in March 2006 of heart complications, starred on the Raritan High School soccer team (class of 1981), and played as a child for his hometown club; Hazlet United S.A.
