Rockets bounce back from a tough start

Things looked bleak for the Raritan High School boys tennis team after they lost their first four matches, but the Rockets have responded by reeling off four successive victories to even their record.

"We were devastated with that start, especially after losing 3-2 to both Monmouth Regional and Howell," coach Gary Schlenker said. "We kind of just sat down and discussed things because we all were working so hard and yet we were losing. They kept working hard and didn't get down on themselves."

That resulted in victories over Middletown North, Jackson, Matawan and Red Bank Regional. Now the Rockets have their collective eyes set on qualifying for the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II tourney. Teams need to be at .500 or better at the end of play on May 1 to qualify.

Lefty Ryan Chin has been solid at second singles, recording a 6-2 mark. Schlenker said Chin worked hard during the off-season to get in better physical shape and has become more aggressive, often following deep forehands to the net.

At first doubles, a pair of sophomores, Cory Hahn and Drew Illinwarth have also posted a 6-2 record, by playing an aggressive style. Juniors Kyle Sullivan and Eric Rimas, the second doubles tandem, are 6-2 as well. Senior Kurt Kester, in his third varsity campaign, has two wins in the first singles spot, despite often playing against some of the top players in the Shore Conference. Kester is at his best when he keeps the ball in play and wears down opponents.

Sophomore Kevin Hedges has been a pleasant surprise at third singles in his first varsity season. Hedges play has mirrored that of the team - he lost his first four matches before winning four straight and continually improving his shots.

"I'm very pleased with the way the team has responded," Schlenker said. "We're very excited about our chances and we want to keep rolling."

The coach credited his assistant, Rob Nucci, who coaches the junior varsity, as well as Chris Berg, the girls' JV mentor; and volunteer assistant Rory Clayton, who formerly played for the Rockets, with helping his team improve.

"We're very fortunate to have four coaches on the courts with our players every day," Schlenker said.

"It's a great opportunity for the kids to learn and we're seeing the results."
