Richard H. Donahue

Mr. Donahue, 92, of Matawan, died May 19, 2007, at Care One at Holmdel. Born in New London, Conn., he resided in Matawan 42 years. He was a retired mechanical engineer at American Can Company, headquartered in Greenwich, Conn., and part of the team that developed "flip top" cans used today. He also played trombone with Les Brown's orchestra during his youth. He was a communicant of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Keyport. He enjoyed music and was educated at Juilliard Academy, New York City. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene Mayernik Donahue in 1999. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Carl Bessey of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and Susan and Bruce Becker of Big Flats, N.Y.; a son, Richard Jr. at home; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be May 23 from 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral service will be May 24 at 11 a.m. at Gethsemane Church. Committal will follow at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet. Anthony A. Nasso

Mr. Nasso, 18, of the Belford section of Middletown, died May 18, 2007, at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Born in Red Bank, he was a lifelong resident of Belford. He was a senior at Middletown High School North, and accepted at Seton Hall University, South Orange. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 92, Hazlet. He was a member of the student council, and mock trial team at Middletown High School North. He is survived by his mother, Ann Marie Nasso of Belford; his maternal grandparents, Kathleen and Charles Nasso of Belford; an aunt, Tara Nasso of Keansburg; an aunt and uncle, Charles and Rosana Nasso of Freehold; and three cousins. A funeral liturgy will be May 23 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial will follow at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown. Olga Bol Tarne

Mrs. Tarne, 87, of Middletown, died May 20, 2007, at home. Born in Argentina, she resided in Bayonne prior to relocating to the Belford section of Middletown in 1957. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. She was a retiree of the Middletown Board of Education. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, John in 2005; two sisters, Maria Haas and Helen Lick; and a brother, Carl Bol. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lydia and John Markevich of Chester, and Doreen and Mark McKenzie of Woodbridge, Va.; a sister, Wanda Szenher; five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. Visitation will be May 23 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will be May 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial will follow at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.

Anna M. Maitland Almond

Mrs. Almond, 91, of Middletown, died May 15, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Lakehurst and Livingston before relocating to Middletown three years ago. She was a volunteer at Paul Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, for more than 20 years. Prior to that, she was a secretary at Livingston High School for more than 25 years. Mrs. Almond was predeceased by her husband, William Almond, in 1985. She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Krebs of Middletown; a niece; and a nephew. Burial was at Crest Haven Cemetery, Clifton. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.

Armand Boffardi

Mr. Boffardi, 92, of South Venice, Fla., died May 15, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, he resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., before relocating to South Venice 24 years ago. Before his retirement in 1977, Mr. Boffardi was a bus mechanic for the New York City Transit Authority, Bronx, N.Y., for more than 20 years. He was a communicant of St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Antoinette Sagona Boffardi; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Jim Sullivan of Middletown, and Anita and Michael Cole of Old Bridge; a brother, Louis Boffardi of South Venice, Fla.; a sister, Chica Carbone of South Venice; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Catherine M. Frazier Binion

Mrs. Binion, 82, of Lambertville, died May 14, 2007, in Lambertville. She had resided in Middletown for 48 years before relocating to Lambertville. She was a retired commissioner on the Township of Middletown Housing Authority during the planning, construction and opening of Tomaso Plaza, Daniel Towers and Luftman Towers. She also was a Democratic Committee member for District 15. Mrs. Binion was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, where she also was a Eucharistic minister. She was a member of the PTAs at St. Mary's School and Mater Dei High School, both New Monmouth. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, David S. Binion in 2000. She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Janet Binion of Woodstock, N.Y., Elaine B. and Jack Skeuse of Lambertville, Margaret Binion of Stockton, and Mary B. and Mark Johnson of Middletown; three sisters, Evelyn Morlano of Sidney, N.Y., Arline Wheeler of Middletown, and Marjorie Nolan of Matawan; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Church, followed by interment at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Evelina "Pina" D. Wilbourn-Townes

Mrs. Wilbourn-Townes, 49, of Freehold, died April 29, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Long Branch, she was a longtime resident of the Matawan-Aberdeen-Cliffwood area before moving to Freehold in 1982. Mrs. Wilbourn-Townes had been employed at Sunshine Biscuit, Sayreville, until 1998, when the plant moved out of state. She graduated from Matawan Regional High School in 1975 and attended Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, for two years. She was a member of St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, Matawan, and Kingdom Hall, Freehold. She was predeceased by her parents, Clint Wilbourn Jr. and Mabel McKnight Wilbourn; three infant brothers; and her first husband, Robert Joyner Sr. Surviving are her husband, Leroy Townes; three sons, Clint Wilbourn III, Robert Joyner Jr., and Tramaine Joyner, all of Freehold; three stepdaughters, Letitia Townes of Freehold, Tonya Johnson of Newark, and Bernadette Johnson of Aberdeen; a stepson, Jerome Johnson of Aberdeen; three sisters, Viola Wilbourn of Aberdeen, Nancy Wilbourn of Freehold, and Georgetta Prince and her husband, Ivory Prince Jr., of Birmingham, Ala.; two stepsisters, Linda Michelle Jordan of Asbury Park and Ann Agent of Florida; a stepbrother, Mark Anthony Jordan; her stepfather, Ernie Hayes of Goosecreek, S.C.; her father, Henry Agent of Keyport; seven aunts; two uncles; two great-aunts; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; friends Katherine Wright of Virginia and Patricia Parker of South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and other friends. Funeral services were held at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, Matawan, followed by interment at Union Prospect Cemetery, Aberdeen. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

Melinda M. Galatro

Mrs. Galatro, of Red Bank, died May 14, 2007, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Red Bank, she relocated to the Shady Oaks section of Middletown in 1983. Before her retirement, Mrs. Galatro was employed at Colorest, Red Bank. Prior to that, during the 1930s, she was a seamstress at Wilhelmina Dobbins and worked at the law office of Florence Forgotson, both Red Bank. She was also a secretary at Bendix Radio during World War II. She was a parishioner at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Mrs. Galatro was predeceased by her husband, William Galatro; a granddaughter, Cara Galatro; two brothers, Vito and Pete; and a sister, Mary Cipoletta. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Pam Galatro, and Richard and Debbie Galatro, all of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township; and two granddaughters. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony's Church, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. Daniel A. Golba

Mr. Golba, 66, of Middletown, died May 16, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was born in Chicopee, Mass. He was a project manager at Depository Trust Co., New York City. Mr. Golba was predeceased by his wife, Sandra J. Golba, in 2006. He is survived by a son, Glenn Golba of Atlantic Highlands; a daughter, Daniella Golba of Taylorsville, N.C.; a sister, Lorraine Golba of Chicopee, Mass.; and two granddaughters. Burial was in Massachusetts. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.

Vivian Schmeling

Mrs. Schmeling, 91, of Swainton, Cape May County, died April 28, 2007, at her son's home in Swainton. She was born in Matawan and had lived in Holmdel before moving to The Villages, Howell, in 1986. A graduate of Matawan High School, she was a lifelong administrative assistant and spent the past 40 years of her career as church secretary at St. John's United Methodist Church in Hazlet. She also volunteered at St. John's as a Sunday school teacher and the director of Christian Education. In later years, she was an active volunteer at Freehold Area Hospital (now CentraState Medical Center), Freehold Township, and the First United Methodist Church of Farmingdale. She knitted hundreds of caps for newborn babies. She also loved going to the beach, playing golf and being a member of her bridge club. Mrs. Schmeling was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, August "Gus" Schmeling, in March 1995. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Raymond and Joanne Schmeling of Swainton; a sister, Katherine Pruden of Matawan; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Richards officiating. Interment followed at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan.

Janet J. Edwards

Mrs. Edwards, 72, of Forked River, died May 15, 2007, at home. Born in Newark, she had resided in Barnegat, Middletown and Bloomfield before relocating to Forked River five years ago. Before her retirement in 1992, Mrs. Edwards was a computer operator at Bell Labs, AT&T and Bellcore, all Lincroft section of Middletown. She is survived by her husband, Quinton Edwards; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Paul Grobelny of Middletown; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Karen Edwards of Middletown, Bob and Ellen Edwards of Keansburg, and Doug and Dorothy Edwards of Forked River; and 15 grandchildren. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.

Raphael S. Hughes Jr.

Mr. Hughes, 74, of Hazlet, died May 16, 2007, at Providence Hospital, Southfield, Mich. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had been a resident of Hazlet for the past 47 years. Mr. Hughes was a systems installer at New York Bell Telephone, New York City, retiring in 1990. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a member of the Navy League and Naval Historical Society. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Mr. Hughes was predeceased by his wife, Joan F. Hughes. He is survived by three sons, U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Stephen R. Hughes of Baltimore, Christopher Hughes of Howell, and Brian Hughes of Freehold; a daughter, Joan Hughes Wozny of Wixom, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Family Church, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by the Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
