Alexander, Scurry lead Matawan to CJ II title BY TIM MORRIS Staff Writer
Area track and field athletes dominated the NJSIAA Central Jersey Groups II and III Championships held last weekend at Monmouth Regional High School.
But none did more than Matawan's Donna Alexander, who picked up three titles and helped the Husky girls top Raritan, 70.50-57, for the Group II sectional title.
As she has all spring, Alexander out-jumped her rivals, easily winning both the long jump and triple jumps. She set a new meet record in the triple jump with a leap of 39-1 1/4. That was two feet better than the previous sectional meet record of 37-1 by Kortni Lane of News Brunswick set back in 2004. The Husky senior won the competition by almost five feet. Her teammates Alyssa Johnson (34-1 1/4) and Erin Scurry (33-0 3/4) were third and fifth as Matawan picked up 18 points in this event.
In the long jump, Alexander jumped a foot further than her nearest competition, winning with a jump of 18-1 1/2. Scurry was sixth (16-0).
Alexander's third gold medal came on the track where, after running the fastest time in qualifying, she posted a 25.05 in winning the 200 final. Alexander placed in a fourth event, the 400 meters, running 58.73, to take fourth. Her 34 points gave the Huskies a great start on their championship, but they had much more.
Scurry, who also placed in four events for the champions, would strike gold in the shot put with a winning throw of 36-4. Scurry also placed in the javelin, where she finished fourth (117-0).
Providing important points for the Huskies were: Johnson, fifth in the javelin (109-6), Monica Kloc, third in the discus (98-4), Lauren Munck, tied for fifth in the pole vault (8-6) and MacKenzie Chambers, fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.90).
Raritan's effort got a major boost from Christine Altland, who won twice. She won the 1,600 meters (5:11.20) and 3,200 (11:38.13) and the Rocket also took sixth in the 800 (2:21.48). Her teammate Chelsea Callan was just ahead of her in fifth (2:21.37). Callahan ran the same triple as her teammate, finishing third in the 1,600 (5:24.22) and fourth in the 3,200 (11:49.50).
The Rockets also got a win from Valerie Carney in the javelin. She won easily at 129-7. Teammate Christine Borkowski, was fourth (109-7). Carnie also finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.25).
Matawan's boys finished third in Group II (62). Andrew Trolian was the only Husky to win a state sectional title, winning the discus (157-6). However, Matawan did have three athletes finish second - Chris McCutcheon in the javelin (171-4), Jon Bartlett in the pole vault (13-0) and Kevin Burns, high jump (6-2). The Huskies got a third place in the 100 from Kyle Hardy (11.35), who was also sixth in the 200 (23.56).
Matawan's distance runners came through with a four-five-six finish in the 1,600. Jake McCormack led the way in fourth (4:36.91) followed by Ryan Monteperto (4:37.20) and James Smith (4:37.62). McCormack was fourth in the 3,200 (10:17.39).
Kyle Robinson was fourth in the high jump (6-0) and fourth in the long jump (21-9). Stephen Turner (47-5 3/4) and Robert Dailey (46-8 3/4) were fifth and sixth in the shot put for Matawan.
The Rocket boys who are headed for the Groups are: Andy Herschman, third in the 1,600 (4:33.18) and sixth in the 800 (2:01.84), Brian England, fourth in the discus (145-10), John Krajunuis, fifth in the high jump (6-0) and Jim Curran, sixth in the 3,200 (10:19.67).
Anyone who finished in the top six last weekend was a winner as they punched their tickets to the NJSIAA State Group Championships. Groups I, II and III will go to South Plainfield High School while Groups IV, Non-Public A and B, go to Egg Harbor Township High School.
The Meet of Champions is June 6 in South Plainfield.
